Due to my growing interest in Yamazaki Kento, I decided to check out Death Note drama. I've watched the movie 10 years ago, but it didn't impress me much. I've never read the manga or watch the anime, but to be honest, the drama impressed me more than the movie. I dunno... maybe the script? It enticed me from beginning to end. Well, there were boring parts, but it has generally kept me intrigued to find out what will happen next.
I think Kubota Masataka as Yagami Light really shines. I liked his portrayal as Light very much... really kakkoii.... as much as I love Fujiwara Tatsuya, I'm sorry to say Kubota outshined him in portraying the role. Kubota's Light is really cool and I was really cheering him on, wishing him a happy ending.
From the drama, I realized the BIG THREE of the story is Light / L / Misa. Really too bad, in the movie, they added an original character, Light's girlfriend, and she was the focus of the first movie.
I like the drama more as it immediately focused on Misa as the heroine. Sano Hinako did a great job as Misa, but she's not pretty enough. Toda Erika's Misa is much cuter, but too bad the script didn't allow her to have a bigger role like Misa in the drama.
Kento is the reason I watched this... but Matsuyama Kenichi's L was really unbeatable. Kento did his best and his effort was not bad, though.
What took me by surprise in this drama was Light and Misa's strong connection. It made me curious. There wasn't such connection in the movie, it was obvious that Misa is just a stalker of Light and Light is just using her. But in the drama, though Light is ignorant of her and her feelings, but most of the time it shows that Light really needs Misa... sometimes he seems to be worried of her safety too. I was interested in these moments. Well, maybe Light does use Misa too, in the end, in this drama.... but I liked the 'does he love her? does he not?' tease going on. Kubota and Misa's actress has good chemistry, but they are supported by a very good script too.
I didn't feel any chemistry between the movie's Light and Misa at all... really too bad considering Fujiwara and Toda should look really good together.
