Part II: One Year Punishment in Huashan
(Episode 6-10)
Main Casts
Li Yapeng as Linghu Chong
Miao Yiyi as Yue Lingshan
Li Jie as Lin Pingzhi
After the whole mayhem in the martial arts world, Linghu Chong's master and Chief of the Huashan sect, Yue Buqun, brings his daughter and his disciples, including Linghu Chong, back to Huashan where Yue's wife awaits with the female disciples. (before, the whole group went to attend Liu Zhengfeng's hand-washing ceremony which was canceled because of his issues with Qu Yang, the evil elder)
He also brought along Lin Pingzhi, his new disciple.
Apparently, Linghu Chong has violated Huashan's rules while he was outside. He killed a member of Qingcheng sect, becoming acquainted with Qu Yang, an elder from the Evil Sect and the pervert criminal, Tian Boguang. His master, Yu Buqun, decided to give him one year punishment, desert him inside a cave in Siguoya (Repentance Cliff).
There's something very naturally despicable and naturally annoying about Yue Buqun. So naturally despicable that I really love his performance, lol. The actor, Wei Zi, is really good in portraying Yue Buqun. He does everything in a very natural manner, but it's enough to make his character stand out. I really don't get how he did that. It takes a very skillful actor to do that, imho. I also love the combination of the script-directing-acting on the scene where Linghu Chong was just talking casually to Yue Buqun before they're back at Huashan, then Yue finished what he wanted to say and out of the blue, "Don't call me 'master' ever again" and walks away in a very casual manner, lol. Linghu Chong really got caught off-guard, since he has not realized his mistakes and right before that, Yue was just talking to him normally. I have to say, good script, great directing, superb acting from Wei Zi. In most wuxia series, a master would immediately tell everything his disciple what he has done wrong and lay it all out for the audience.
For this arc, I feel obligated to mention the breath-taking sceneries! Goddammit! They found a location similar to heaven for Huashan! I really, really love the location for Huashan, and the buildings built there. Everything feels so green and homey and comfortable. Exactly how Huashan was described in the novel. I didn't know that it is actually possible to realize that description O_O I even love Linghu Chong's room, the interior design interests me, something very resort-like with that room, lol.
Linghu Chong accepted the punishment from Yue without any dejected feeling whatsoever, he acts like he realized he truly deserves the punishment. After Yue told him that, he just stayed his happy-go-lucky self. There's an additional scene here that doesn't exist in the novel and I love it. Before his departure to Siguoya, Linghu Chong went back to his room to find Lin Pingzhi there leaving money for him and LHC told him he doesn't need money in Siguoya because he's gonna be living inside a cave, not even a single bird would stop by over there. But LHC thanked Lin for his kind intention. It was a casual conversation between the two, but I love it exactly due to it's casuality. Then Yue Lingshan, Yue's daughter also LHC's first love, came to his room. Lin Pingzhi left them alone. Lingshan immediately hugged LHC crying saying that he doesn't deserve the punishment and all. Linghu Chong just brushed her off saying everything is alright and told her "Now c'mon, let's do the usual wine-drinking horse ride." LHC gives her piggyback ride and LHC tries to drink the wine from the bottle Lingshan is holding and she tease him making it hard for him to drink. It made her laugh. It was a very cute scene and I start shipping the two for a bit. Why I love this scene? It introduces Linghu Chong's easy-going attitude. When everyone feels pity and sympathizes him, he acts nonchalantly, like the one year punishment is not a big deal for him.
Once Linghu Chong sets off to Siguoya, the story gets draggy as Yue Lingshan had a change of heart and start falling in love with Lin Pingzhi. The original novel was quite draggy on this part as well, so we can't blame this adaptation for being draggy about it. In the beginning, she often visits Linghu Chong in Siguoya to bring foods for him and they'll have a long chat till sunset. But then one thing lent to another, Lingshan didn't go visit Linghu Chong as often as she used to be and to make it short, once Linghu Chong found out Lingshan had a change of heart, he become very sad and frustrated. One night, something related to that matter made him very emotional and feel annoyed so he practiced his sword skill and accidentally thrusted his sword into a rock wall. He realized the wall is very thin and he found an underground room behind the rocks. He found pictures of martial arts moves inside the underground cave. Counter-attack moves of the righteous sect's martial arts. He found out later that these moves were created by the Evil Sect to fight against the righteous sect.
One day, to his surprise, Tian Boguang, the pervert criminal came to visit him. He brought him wine and Linghu Chong accepted him in a very friendly manner. They drank a couple cups of wine but then Linghu Chong kicked off the wine jars and told Tian Boguang, now that he has drink the wine it's time to fight him, he promised himself to kill TBG next time he meet him so he's gonna do just that. Linghu Chong didn't even ask TBG's reason coming there to visit him. After a few rounds of fight, TBG revealed that he was forced to take poison by Yilin's father and he has to bring Linghu Chong to Yilin for him to get the antidote. Apparently, Yilin, the teenage nun, has fallen deeply in love with Linghu Chong and can't stop thinking about him. So Yilin's father, a monk, determined to bring the man she loves, to meet her again. Linghu Chong refused. In the middle of their fights, an elder of Huashan sect, Feng Qingyang, whom have disappeared for a long time, appeared before them and decided to teach "Dugu Nine Swords" to Linghu Chong, a very powerful swordplay to counter all kind of weapons. After a couple of days, Linghu Chong finally managed to beat Tian Boguang, TBG decided to leave but he said this is not over.
I really love Linghu Chong and Tian Boguang's funny words exchange. I really feel it's too bad that Tian Boguang doesn't appear often enough in the story. A lot of opinions thinks this actor, Sun Haiying, was a total miscast for the role. But as I read the novel again, I really don't think so. None of the character's description says he has to have a clean cut look and looks heroic. The novel just constantly mentions he's a pervert robber and rapist. He was described well-dressed though, but that's it. I read the book and I don't find any fault in this adaptation's Tian Boguang, I think he fits the role very well, exactly how a pervert criminal would look like.
Which reminds me to mention that this adaptation doesn't hesitate to cast unattractive-looking actors. Most wuxia series nowadays casts clean-looking and downright handsome actors and smooth-skinned beautiful actresses for all the supporting roles making the wuxia world looks like a fairytale world. That's just wrong and too much of a fantasy. I really don't buy that and it looks so fake for me. As long as they have onscreen presence and good acting skill, I really prefer watching unattractive-looking actors playing the supporting roles.
Once Tian Boguang left, Feng Qingyang taught the rest of Dugu skill to Linghu Chong. One day, his martial arts brother, Lu Dayou came and told him their master is in trouble. Long ago, Huashan had internal conflict and split into two, the Sword faction and Qi faction. The sword faction was defeated and disappeared. Apparently the Songshan sect (which chief is the Leader of the Five Alliance) and the Sword faction are working together to take down Yue Buqun as the chief of Huashan. Linghu Chong decided to leave Siguoya and help his master. On the way, he meet six ugly-looking and dumb brothers (yet strong) calling themselves Six Fairies of the Peach Valley telling Linghu Chong to come with them to meet Yilin. LHC tricked them and they decided to help LHC to chase away those people trying to make troubles with Yue Buqun.
As he reached home, he challenged Feng Buping, one of the Sword faction men. Linghu Chong used a broom as a sword and he won the fight, though Feng had the chance to heavily injure him internally. Seeing LHC got injured, the Six Fairies violently killed Feng by pulling his hands and legs and his body split into several parts. The Six Fairies kidnapped LHC and tried to heal him, but end up making it worse. They decided to return LHC back to Huashan.
This arc ended with Yue Buqun's decision to empty the Huashan sect and bring all the disciples come with him on a journey to Songshan asking for justice, as the Sword faction kept cornering him.
To be continued to Part III: Granny at the Green Bamboo Lane.
Where the story gets really exciting and no more slow-paced nor draggy episodes till the final episode!
