As is often the case, The Flash looked really fun from the trailer and turned out to be... not so much, and Gotham's trailer was a snooze-fest, while the pilot was really entertaining.
I'd actually been very much looking forward to The Flash but, like Arrow, I think it may turn out to be Not For Me. Grant Gustin as Barry Allen is just kind of wimpy and bland; it looks pretty cheap in a 90s TV sort of way; I can already tell that a lot of the beats (Detective West is grumpy and overprotective! Iris can't know anything!) are going to get repetitive very quickly; and apart from a couple of funny moments the dialogue is irredeemably cheesy. Also, Barry's relationship with Iris has Nice Guy written all over it
Gotham, on the other hand, was a lot of fun. I'm already intrigued by a lot of the characters - my favourite so far may be the acerbic Alfred, but I also really like Montoya and her partner, and I'm interested by the glimpses we get of Selina Kyle (good steampunk goggles there, Catwoman.)
Jim Gordon is more appealing as a character than I initially thought he would be, and the pilot sets up a good complex relationship between him and Harvey. I also like that a past relationship between Barbara and Renee has already been teased, and I hope we get to see more of them together. And young Bruce Wayne is really good! David Mazouz really sells the angst without getting too ridiculous.
The pilot also looks amazing, and I'm slightly worried that they spent all their money on that episode and are going to have to have the rest of the season take place in the police precinct. So far they're also doing a good job of making everything appear slightly retro, but not having it look like it's set in a particular decade. Everyone has cell phones, but I'm not sure we saw any computers in the pilot, so I'm interested to see how they continue that.
I had been planning to watch Gotham at Brit TV pace, but I think I may have to give in and download it so I can commune with the internet about it!
