Happy Mooncake Festival - Sept 14th~

Sep 15, 2008 16:36

To my non-Chinese readers, I shall give a brief introduction on this particular festival!

It is known as Mooncake Festival, Mid-Autumn Festival or the Lantern Festival.
Well actually, I only know that much. And we eat mooncakes on that day, and throughout the month basically.

Wiki is a good source.

From what I read, there are 6 versions to the story of this festival, and the only version I've heard of during my childhood is this version, from wiki:
Chang'e was a goddess. She fell in love with a farmer, Houyi, and he fell in love with her, not knowing she was from the heavens up above. Soon he had found out and the gods from heaven were furious of them because it was forbidden for a god or goddess to fall in love with a human. They had a child together but she still had to leave both her beloved husband and child behind during mid-autumn. She would represent the moon, he would represent as the sun and the child would represent as the stars. Taken pity over them, they are only allowed to see each other every mid-autumn.

This is what a traditional mooncake looks like:

But now, mooncake comes in various shapes and sizes!

Joining in the fun are:
Starbucks mooncake

And to my surprise, (and I mean really really surprised)

NOKIA MOONCAKES

I... have no idea what to expect anymore.

So anyway, in conjunction with that, we had an outing! =D
It all started when our gang decided on Thai buffet... Then we decided to eat dim sum instead. From a whole bunch of people, it narrowed down into 5 of us - me, Yvonne, See Mun, Jocelyn and Gan Li.

We had dim sum in the morning at Shark Fin Inn in Chinatown!

Then we were supposed to go back after that, but instead, someone suggested we go DFO for shopping~ I've been there like... 3 days in a row. And bought cheap stuff from Cotton On. 5AUD each, such a bargain! =D

Then later in the evening, we were talking and crapping until someone said
"Let's have steamboat today!"

We were like OK OK LET'S GO. Since my friends lived in Campus Walk, it was suitable because their unit consists of only the 2 of them. They wanted to buy steamboat materials from Australinia, but it closed early. Who said they closed at 8pm huh?

Time to improvise! In Jo and Gan Li's unit, they had some yee mee, egg noodles, frozen fishballs, tofu, vege and 3 sausages (LOL).  See Mun brought seaweed and tom yam paste while I contributed some beancurd skin. We decided to head to our trusty COLES to buy more food. XD In the end, all we bought were more sausages and cooked prawns! Cheap!

We started to prepare, and this is our result!

Eh, who's stealing food?! D=

We chatted all night, and ate while watching Moonlight Resonance and Hotshot. All the drama talk and discussing which actor is cuter than the other. And we somehow agreed that Wu Chun became Gan Li's brother (because they have the same surname) and began plotting how to woo him. Haha! Girls. =)

We also came to a conclusion that having a bishie (pretty boy) as a brother is wayyyyyyy better than a boyfriend. LOL. That way we can have him for life! Right, Pii-niichan?

Our steamboat session ended with rich chocolate ice cream. The girls even walked me and Yvonne all the way back to our house as it was already around 1am at that time.

Nice having spent the day with you girls!

First steamboat ever during Winter! =)
