I knew, when I gave you this prompt, that you'd do an amazing job of it. But you've done more than that. You've surpassed my expectations many times over. If I were to quote my favourite passages here, I'd be repeating something like 70% of the story. So I'll try to summarise.
Rose's reservations come across so very well. She's a product of her times and of Jackie's upbringing. You also write her as very human - she can only see her own point of view, until the Doctor first makes her see a different perspective, and then she starts thinking things through on her own. Like joking, I thought it was very clever to use racial and sexuality prejudices to help her understand where Jack and the Doctor are coming from.
Jack is so lovely in this story. He simply doesn't get it, at first, but once he does he's so terrified of doing anything else to hurt or frighten Rose. But once he knew she wasn't frightened the flirting was lovely - and I laughed out loud at his panic over pyjamas and the state of his room.
Love the Doctor, too. Playing mediator between the two of them, except where Jack was the one who realised there were communication issues, and being honest enough to let Rose know that the two of them were having a hard time in bed with her (pun intended *g*) but that they loved her enough to do it.
And Rose's about-face is very plausible - you showed the progression of her thoughts and understanding so that once she knew what a sacrifice they were making to keep her comfortable it was natural for her to let her reservations go. Bet she's not looking forward to Jackie finding out, though! ;)
I can't thank you enough for this! It's perfect in many more ways than I can possibly explain :))) Fantastic!!
Okay, I've got my hyperventilating under control to the point where I can reply to this.
THANK YOU! This is an incredibly brilliant and thoughtful comment! And I'm so, so glad you like the story. I was really worried when I first got the prompt, not certain if I'd be able to write what you wanted from it - unlike you, I wasn't at all sure I'd do a fantastic job. *g*
I'm glad you found Rose's point of view (and change thereof) natural and believable. She's not trying to be difficult, and neither is Jack, they just have so radically different views on this they might as well be aliens to each other.
(Jack's room and lack of pyjama's just grew naturally from my image of the character. Which is also why I had the Doctor spot the PJs-problem before Jack even had to voice it. Anyone who understands Jack's attitude would know he doesn't have any. *g*)
And yes - since they (per your prompt) were already at hugs and cuddles before this story starts, the Doctor was clearly already past his initial "don't fall for companions" reservations, and once he was willing to be honest with himself, he was also very open (and understanding) with both of them.
Knowing more about both their times than they know about each other's, he understand where they're both coming from, and even though his own inclinations agree with Jack, he'd never want to push Rose out of her comfort zone. but he won't let her hurt Jack, either.
