Ys: Memories of Celceta (PS Vita)

Mar 30, 2014 15:24

It's high time that I revive this blog. First update of the year is my review of this game and first game for my ps Vita.

I love RPG games and hate it at the same time as most requires a lot of timed jumping which I just sucks terribly at it.
I just want to slam the console or controller on the floor when I have to attempt jumping more than 5 times onto a moving barrel or similiar shit.
This game, however, doesn't allow you to jump and it's like a saint from Heaven.
I have played it for 10 hours already and seriously after reading the walkthrough like a storybook, I estimated that I am around halfway done.
It's either I am slow or the game is a fairly big game. Probably the former. I like to slowly grind upwards.
Okay, onwards to the plot, play style and definitely my comments. Spoilers ahead.

Plot
The game starts off with a red headed, lightly dressed traveler dragging his feet into a town literally.
After accidentally knocking shoulders with an asshole, he collapsed.
Next you find yourself in a inn properly rested, rescued by the inn owners. She will tell you to take it easy and shortly, Duren, a silver haired macho tank will talk to you. Apparently, our protagonist is call Adol and he has lost all his memories. Duren thought it's a joke at first but Adol will prove him wrong.

After this, a commotion will start about the mines nearby and everyone will go there. Adol follows them and he wants to go in to save those trapped within.
Yeah, Adol, I love your enthusiasm and your one way ticket to hell with no weapon. Luckily, our tiger cub, Duren will lend his help. After rescuing the miners, Adol becomes the hot shot of the town and he's tasked to explore the Forest by the General of the town. Time for an adventure.

Immediately after leaving the gate, you will find all these monuments or stones like allows you to warp between similiar coloured and shaped monuments. It save time but I like to go on foot killing everything in my path for the experience points, money and ingredients which are all very useful in upgrading your weapons. Along the way, Adol will slowly recovers his memories and meet all these new characters that all knows him but he himself doesn't remember them at their 'first' encounter. It's a recurring joke that Adol caused some kind of problem at each village or town.

I have reached the third town/village in which it's suspected to be the cause of his loss of his memories. Adol is on his way to meet the God who 'caused' his memory loss.

As far as I can tell from the plot, Adol is a explorer who gets very excited and enthusiastic over new unknown things. He probably explored the whole Forest of no return and his knowledge of the forest has indirectly caused all these havoc. It's not explained yet but I think his missing belongings are what allowed the antagonists access to all the so-called unexplored lands but it's purely my speculation.

Gameplay
This is the first time I play a game from the Ys series so I have no idea what to expect. So far so good for me in turn of gameplay.
It is a straight on button smashing game though it takes a little bit of strategy like choosing the correct party and main fighting power for each monster.
There are currently 3 kinds, slashing like Adol, smashing like Duren and piercing like Karna or Ozma. I prefer Adol as my vanguard as he's agile plus his weapon allows me to slash while dodging and turning. The piercing type requires you to anchor in one direction if not you just miss but it's great for distance fight. Each type is strong against certain types of monsters so it's better to just switch for different monsters.

Next is the weapons and armories. There are a lot to do. You can buy new ones at each village or town. I have noticed that the armory between some do not have much difference and you might not need to change at all. However, I'm freaking rich all the time so I just buy every shit out there. Seriously though, you only need to upgrade the weapons or armories sometimes, not buy new ones.

Then, it is the upgrade function. You look for a refinery to reinforce your weapons and armories to increase the stats. I increase everything but if you don't have money or enough ingredients to do so, you should focus on speed, paralysis, evasion and definitely heal.

Next would of course be the accessories. It won't be a RPG without accessories. This game allows you to craft accessories. Very interesting. Depending on the accessories, it has a different function. I have the life ring equipped all time to increase HP. Every little bit helps.

There's also the artifacts that allows you to do things that normal humans can't like shrink in size to go down small holes to get to other areas, dive underwater without the need to come up for air or a cape that just heals you.

Lastly, it's all choices you made as Adol. Currently, I have no idea if the options has any ultimate outcome on the entire plot like Adol dying or happy end. I haven't play any other Ys to know. I only know right now that you do get additional potion or sort from characters depending on the option like being nice.
Looking the options, I just want to laugh sometimes. The options is either Adol being an complete idiot or a smarter explorer. There are other options like Adol being a snarly bitch or sensitive and polite gentleman. I always go for the polite option as looking at his character design in the picture above, Adol doesn't seem like a bitch.

Review/Comment
I love the simple one button smashing gameplay as I can't press combination very well. I can dodge fairly well but not attack by button synchronization.
I definitely love how I don't need to jump at all.
As for the plot, I like it. Nothing angst-y and I like fantasy story. I also like how I can change weapons and accessories like a fashion show.
In terms of graphic, it's more anime style. If you are looking for CG like Infamous second son, sorry, you got the wrong game.
For now, I feel that this might in fact be the second game I finish till the very end after Pokemon Emerald.
It's a good buy, costing me only $50+.
