Phantasmagoria - Seeds of Brain
Phantasmagoria released two new CDs on 2010/03/10 -- and how long has it been since they disbanded and KISAKI retired? Of course, KISAKI's retirement is over now, too, since he's announced that he's forming a new band. Does that mean that Phantasmagoria will really be over? I'm glad that Mago is such a prolific un-band, but I feel like I'm in a constant state of limbo, wondering if they'll continue to be an un-band that regularly releases new music and gets together in shiny new costumes to play the occasional live show here and there, or if they'll really and truly disband for real one of these days... Of course, that would launch another round of the KISAKI farewell orgy, and it could well drag on well past the end of my natural life, so in the meantime, I'm going to keep sending my money to KISAKI in exchange for whatever music his un-band decides to make!
This time, we have Seeds of Brain, which is billed as a "RARE TRACK MINI ALBUM", but since all of these songs are being released for the very first time, I'm not sure that I understand that description. Maybe that means that some of these songs were played live and just not previously released? I don't know... But I'm glad that they're here now! The title track is an atmospheric little instrumental intro, and then the other three are fairly long Mago songs. My first impression is that the songs are all good, but maybe not quite as strong as I expect from Mago. I suspect that since they no longer play together full-time and no longer write together full-time that they're not quite at their peak anymore, and that makes sense. But even not-quite-perfect Mago is better than an awful lot of other bands out there, and I really do like this single! "Cry..." and "My Mental State..." stand out particularly well, I think.
