MEME

Respond with COMMENT and I will give you five things to talk about that I associate you with. Try it out, it's fun!

1. Emil
2. DNAngel
3. Escaflowne
4. Fragile
5. Emil x Marta

Emil:
Wow. Where do I start here? A lot of people hate Emil. Some call him the most annoying Tales character to date (a great majority of those people seem to dislike Luke too though). I don't have those feelings. On the contrary. Emil is actually one of my favorite Tales characters. Yes, he's whiny and annoying at times, at least in the dub, but he has the most growth and potential for growth. One reason I never seem to get too annoyed at "annoying" main tales characters in the beginning of the game is because I know they won't stay that way. Something, sooner or later, will mess up their personality and they will change for the better. At least, that's the case for most of the characters I have seen. And Emil is no different.

Anyway, as someone who's always been extremely sensitive, I can totally relate to Emil, which is one reason I like him so much. I understand where he's coming from. People don't seem to realize that Emil lost his entire family, then came to a new village to live with relatives he doesn't even know, is ostracized by his ENTIRE village, who blame him for something he didn't do and had no control over (so he thinks), is made fun of and misunderstood, and on top of that is physically and mentally assaulted by his aunt and uncle on a constant basis. With all that going on, it would only make sense for Emil to react how he does, though I think JYB overdid it a little with the speaking parts. The fact that he suffers from all that and is still able to be a caring considerate person who grows out of that state and becomes more confident is really appealing to me. Sure, he doesn't do it by himself, but he's not at a point in his life where he can just pull himself up by his boot straps entirely by himself. He needs encouragement. Let's just say that his pulling himself up and starting to value himself as a person, despite everything that happened, was really encouraging. I especially admired the fact that he returned to his aunt and uncle and tried to make peace with them, despite everything they did to him. That takes a lot of guts.

Another reason I like Emil is because of his split personality. I am a big fan of psychology, and I like watching the struggle Emil and Ratatosk go through to accept each other as part of themselves. I had a lot of fun watching Emil switch back and forth and how it affected the others around him. I also liked Ratatosk a lot. He was a jerk, yes, but I think there was more than that. Ratatosk had been hurt deeply by humans, and his angery and cool treatment was his way of lashing out. It was cute watching him be nice to Martmart and nice to see him finally accept the others in the end and make his peace with humans.

Am I done now?

DNAngel
I've talked a bit about DN before, but I guess I gotta do it again. XD DNAngel was my gateway drug to manga. I never really cared much about manga until I started reading summaries for DNAngel on Lelola. I was interested in DN because of the art and because I liked the whole split persons that Dark and Daisuke had (as you can see, I'm a big fan of that). I found Daisuke adorable as a main character. He was incredibly sensitive, shy, and kind of a dork, all of which I found...find incredibly endearing. I guess I'm a fan of "wussy" characters, and Daisuke definitely fits that bill, but he manages to pull it off in a non-annoying way.

I also like Dark a lot too though. I like Dark's laid back personality and his inner struggle to try to get Daisuke to realize they are one and the same. I think Dark is a bit conflicted in that sense. He's happy that he can play after 40 years of absence, but at the same time he wants Daisuke to accept him as part of himself. He struggles a lot over his "monster self", as he explained it to Risa.

Other than Dark and Daisuke, I also like Satoshi a lot, particularly with Risa. Satoshi has a lot of demons to cope with, particularly in the fact that he houses an insane, rabid psychopath named Krad, but also because of the whole "not living long" thing. I admit that I am super curious to find out more about what he means by this, and if he is capable of "breaking" the curse. I have to wonder if the reason for Satoshi's "curse" lies with Krad's existence inside himself, and if that's partly why he's so obsessed with getting rid of Dark. Dark and Krad are one and the same, after all, so getting rid of Dark may help to get rid of Krad.... This is another thing I find fascinating about Satoshi. If my hypothesis is correct, then Satoshi's an awesome person for not turning Daisuke in. With all the time he spends with Daisuke, he could totally get to Dark, but he doesn't. He doesn't show it much, but it seems that he genuinly cares for Daisuke, and doesn't want to see anything bad happen to Daisuke. But at the same time he wants to get rid of Dark. It's those conflicted feelings that really make Satoshi an interesting character. And then there is the whole Satoshi x Risa thing. They make a cute couple, and Satoshi deserves to be happy. And Risa needs someone to get her away from Dark because it's not going to work (this is the sad fate of Dark. His romances will never work since he isn't really his own person).

I like Risa a lot because she seems to have matured from the beginning of the manga. Near the beginning she was just a Dark otaku, completely obsessed with making Dark hers, but she's grown up a lot. She may still rely on Dark a lot, but she's not nearly as annoying as she used to be.

And Riku is Riku. She's cute with Daisuke, but she grates on annoying at times, especially with her continuous "I hate Dark" attitude. I understand her feelings, but that doesn't mean I like her any more for them. XD

Escaflowne
Escaflowne was my gateway drug into anime in general. It used to air edited on Saturday morning cartoons. At first I didn't want to see it because I thought it looked lame and the animation dumb (I mean, what was with the noses? And what where the halos in their hair?). But eventually I got around to watching it with my cousins and I fell in love with it. To this day it's still my favorite anime, and Van-sama will always be my favorite anime bishounen. If he were real, I would totally marry him .

So let's begin...

Van: It's been years and years since Escaflowne first started, yet I still love this guy. I guess some things never change. When I talked to a friend about it, she suggested that that's just the kind of guy I like in general, and I shouldn't worry too much about it. So I haven't. Anyway, one of the first things I really liked about Van-sama was his voice. Kirby Morrow did an awesome job in the dub as Van, and I love his voice to bits. I've tried watching the show in Japanese and had to stop mid episode because I couldn't listen to Seki Tomokazu scream anymore. I finally did manage to watch the whole series, but that was with a group of friends, and it was kind of painful. Anyway, the main reason I love Van as a character is because of his personality. On the surface he seems distant and kind of arrogant, but when you get to know him you find out that he's still in the sensitive awkward stage. He works really hard for the people he cares about and doesn't parade the fact. While he does seem to rely on others to help him sort out his feelings and emotions, he takes the final step by himself, and shoulders a lot of his burdens on his own. He doesn't want to involve others in his own problems and cause pain to them, so he fights himself. He's got a lot of honor and courage, and spends most of the series growing up and fleshing out those traits. He has always had a lot of potential as a king, and it was great to see that potential grow up along with him as he learned more about the world and his place in it. He managed to shrug off a lot of the arrogance by the end of the show and become a mature adult.

Dilandau: Next to Van, Dilly is my favorite character. But how can this be, you think. Van and Dilandau are sworn enemies! Or something like that. I liked Dilly mostly for his insanity and rabid obsession with fire, but also for his personality. Dilandau suffers from a lot of mental problems, his biggest that he is afraid of being alone. He treats his men horribly at times, but you can tell in the end that he genuinely cares for them, and is willing to go the extra mile to gain revenge on them after they are killed. The biggest problem with Dilandau is that he is afraid people will leave him, but he doesn't know how to keep people close to him, so he lashes out on them. I find this fascinating. Even by the end of the series, Dilandau is not totally cured, but now that he's with family again it might be a little easier (even if it is with Allen. Blech). Annnnd that's pretty much it. I blame my pyro tendencies on Dilly, though I have to admit watching things burn is just fun, especially plastic.

Fragile
I had super epic things to say about this, but LJ is being a bitch and I lost my entire entry. So I will say this.

I love the idea of exploring, which is why I love games like Chibi-Robo, Zelda, and Endless Ocean. I love Seto as a character, I like the Japanese voice acting (JYB as Seto is fail, I love the backgrounds, and I love the motion capture. That is all.

Emil x Marta
I like to call Marta MartMart. I blame this on kazenokaitou. Anyway, Martmart is one of the few female characters in Tales that I like and annoys me at the same time. I really like her with Emil because I think the two complement each other well. They both make up for what each other lacks and they're able to support each other. I didn't like how she paraded Emil around in the beginning of the game, trying to make him like her and making him into something he's not, but I really liked her at the end when she realized that Emil was not who she thought he was but still loved him despite that. It takes a lot to put up with Emil's split personality, and I think Marta was able to cope with it pretty well. So I give her props for that. She's also a pretty wicked healer as well as fighter, and I love my healer fighters. So yeah.

I had more to say about this originally, but I kind of lost inspiration now that I have to rewrite the whole thing. Next time I do these memes I will do them in Word and then cut and paste it to LJ so I don't lose it....

Anyway, Emil and Marta is one of my favorite couplings, next to Lloyd/Colette and Kratos/Anna (isn't it funny how all my favorite pairings are Symphonia or Symphonia related XD).

Going hiking tomorrow, and hopefully to Yongsan. I want to do some price shopping and maybe pick up a videogame or something... I'm especially interested to see if they have ToS-R and Graces.
