There was a topic on the official WoW forums that, granted,
wasn't too interesting, but got me thinking and where that thought process was was.
Of course, if somebody asks "can a Night Elf become addicted to magic" the general answer is going to be no. After all, Night Elves as a race don't use Arcane Magic, and they sure as hell don't use Fel Magic. The only magic type things that they use are based in Nature, or sometimes with the Holy Light, neither of which corrupts it users.
Now, that got me thinking about Mages, especially the ones in Dalaran, and
Willow from Buffy the Vampire Slayer. Blood Elf (and before that, High Elf) Magic Addiction is the absolute worst off you can get. Not only do you need magic around to just survive, not only will your children need magic, your children's children children need it. That's pretty bad. Night Elves had something like that going on way back when (They even had the
"original Sunwell") but that was before there were High Elves, and it wasn't nearly that bad. It was about then that the Night Elves swore off Arcane magic, and the Highborne became High Elves.
But Blood Elves, the race of addicts, aren't the only people that use Arcane magic. What about everyone else?
Mages use magic for everything. I haven't personally played one, but I can only assume that they eat more conjured food more often than my Warlock does. They can (and do) teleport to every major city whenever they have the proper items (and they usually do) and it's not strange for one to leave a portal open for other people. They use Arcane Magic, something that's proven incredibly addictive in the past, for almost everything on a regular basis. There might even be some that wouldn't know what to do with their magic.
....A side note about the game mecanichs. The three talent trees for Mages are Arcane, Frost, and Fire. In my mind this only talks about the type of spells you use, not the power you are drawing from to cast these spells. This means that while a Shaman, Mage, and Warlock can all cast fire spells, each is a very different "brand" of fire spell. A Shaman's spells are powered by The Spirits (or for Trolls, this is probably the closest to Voodoo you can get in the game, so The Loa could be involved, a Warlock's spells are powered by demonic energies from the Twisting Nether, and a Mage's is powered by Arcane Arts. I know the Mage one is a little vague, but I'm honestly not sure how to describe "Arcane." Maybe the best way would be to say each class's magic has a different feel even though some of the end effects may be the same.
