The legendary popular manga "Ashita no Joe" will be made into a live action movie after fourty years, with NEWS' Yamashita Tomohisa (24) as the main character Yabuki Joe. Yamashita Tomohisa, known to love boxing, promised, "In order to live up to this great work, I will do my utmost best to play this role", and went into serious training. It is anticipated to premier early spring of next year, and to be directed by the famous director of Ping Pong, Fumihiko Sori. This work is a representative manga of the Showa period, to be played by the idol Yamapi of Heisei peroid. "Ashita no Joe" and "Kyojin no Hoshi" were written by Kajiwara Ikki under the pseudonym Asao Takamori, and illustrated by Chiba Tetsuya. From 1968, it was published in Weekly Shounen Magazine for six years. In the story, when Joe's archrival Rikiishi dies, there was a funeral for the character in society, and became a social phenomenon, a megahit manga with cumulative sales of 20 million copies.
It was made into an anime from 1970-1071 by Fuji Terebi, and 1980-81 by Nihon Terebi. In 1980 and 1981, it was released nationally as an animated movie. in 1970, Ishibashi Shoji (61) starred in the first live action movie.
From five years ago, TBS producer Iyoda Hidenori (42) has been planning to make it into a live action movie again after fourty years, and said that the purpose of this production is "To show young people today, the youthful story of a young man who stood up by his own strength".
Since he was 20, Yamashita, who loves boxing, often went to the gym to undergo training in his free time. And so, he became fated to be tied to the character of Joe. Other than athletic ability, he also plays the starring role in "Code Blue" and other Fuji Terebi getsu9 dramas. Posessing both popularity and acting ability, he received the offer for this role around a year ago. The producer Iyoda Hidenori even said, "Without Yamashita-kun, this production could not have become a reality."
The the producing team met for the first time last month. At that time, Yamashita was asked to ad lib an attack, and Kagawa, who will play Tange, defended in a shadow boxing match in front of the staff. Iyoda Hidenori said, "Everyone cheered and it already seemed to be moving along."
The director is a well known expert in computer graphic, and was the director for the popular movie "Ping Pong" (2002), Fumihiko Sori. Combining the physical performance of the actors with computer graphics, Joe's specialty, the cross counter, should be able to be expressed realistically.
The climax of the story will be Joe's final battle with Ikiishi. With the gym Tange opened as the main stage, there will be a 5000m2 area near the Tokyo area for the filming.
