A/N: I think
maplarojcan writes the sweetest Yamajima's ever. Her fics kind of drove me to write a Yamajima. You're probably thinking I'm a creep right now XD
One: Kindergarten
Yamada’s tiny body stumbled into the classroom as he was pushed by his mother. He looked at the classroom, scanning it. With one last glance at his mother, he walked and sat on an empty seat.
The class was a ruckus; little children laughing and making new friends whilst he sat in the corner of the room: alone. He was a shy boy and didn’t know how socialize.
It was the first day of school for him and he’d only sat there for a few minutes but he already felt like running away and crying.
That was until a small, thin boy approached him.
“Hi!” the boy greeted him enthusiastically. “I’m Nakajima Yuto. What’s yours?”
He stared at Yuto for a while, blushing. “I-I’m Y-Yamada Ryosuke.”
“Ryo-chan? Wanna be friends?” Yuto beamed.
Yamada tilted his head to the side and asked naively, “Will we be friends forever?”
Yuto giggled, “Of course!”
The chubby boy smiled happily as the feelings he felt earlier eroded away.
Two: Strawberries and bugs
“Yuu-chan~ if you had to choose between me and your bug collection, which would you pick?” 10 year-old Yamada asked.
Yuto looked up from the box of ants he was playing with to the boy who was stuffing his face with strawberries. “Hm, I’d pick my bug collection!”
Yamada dropped the strawberry that was halfway to his mouth and pouted. “Yuu-chan no love me?”
The younger boy threw his head back and laughed. “You’re so cute, Ryo-chan. I was just kidding. I’d pick you over anything.”
Ryosuke’s grin was so wide it could have reached his ears and resumed munching on his favourite fruit.
“What about you, Ryo-chan? Would you pick me or strawberries?”
“I’d pick you of course! We promised to be friends forever right?”
“Uhn!” Yuto responded as he continued to play with his ants and Yamada watched, basket of red fruits in hand.
Three: First break up
“Shh, it’s okay Ryo-chan. I’m here.” Yuto comforted the other boy, hugging and rocking him back and forth. “She wasn’t worth it anyway. I’m here, I’ll always be here.”
Yamada sobbed, “R-really?”
Yuto smiled reassuringly. “Yeah, love only lasts a second, but a friendship lasts forever. Besides, I’m sure you’ll find someone else later in life; someone much better and someone who will make you happy.”
He didn’t let go of Yamada until all of his tears were drained. The older boy looked up to his friend and said, “I don’t think I need another someone anymore. I’ve got you and you already make me happy.”
Four: Cake
“Jan ken pon!” they shouted.
“Hah! I win!” Yamada screamed in victory and grabbed the last piece of strawberry cake.
Yuto sulked and sat in the corner of the room, hugging his legs to his chest, placing his head on his knees.
“No need to be all emo. Here take this.”
He looked up and saw Yamada offering a plastic fork. He took it as the older boy sat beside him.
“We can share.”
“E-eh? But you never share your stuff! Especially if it involves strawberries. What’s the catch?”
Yamada sighed, “I’m just trying to be a good friend and I don’t like seeing you sulk. You just have to swear on one thing.”
“I knew you wanted something,” Yuto mumbled. “What is it?”
“Promise me that you’ll never leave me. Stay by my side and be my best friend.”
“That’s three things.”
Yamada smacked Yuto on the head. “I’m serious!”
The younger boy giggled. “Of course, Ryo-chan. Forever and ever.”
They exchanged smiles and dug into the small piece of cake.
Five: What if?
“Ne, Yuto.”
“Hm?”
“What would happen if we’d never met at that kindergarten? Would we still be friends like this?”
“I don’t know, but I think we would meet later in life eventually.”
“You really think so?”
“Uhn, our bond is so strong no one can break it. It’s like we’re connected somehow.”
Yamada laughed. “Connected?”
“Don’t laugh! You were the one who asked,” blushing Yuto said.
“Okay, okay. I’m sorry. Friends for eternity?” Yamada reached out his hand.
Yuto shook it, “Always.”
Plus One
“I don’t want to lose you.”
“You won’t.”
“Please, don’t leave.”
“I have to. I’m sorry, Ryo-chan.”
Yamada wanted to cry. He wanted to break down but he couldn’t. Not now, not in front of Yuto.
“But why?”
“I already told you. I need to get away, everything’s just not right. But I’ll come back. I’ll come back for you.”
“Can’t you at least, at least stay in Japan?”
“I can’t and you know that.”
“We…we’ll still be friends forever won’t we, Yuto-chan?”
“No, no we won’t.”
The tears that Yamada had fought came pouring down his cheeks, gushing out in torrents.
Yuto wiped the tears away and hugged his friend, whispering in his ear, “We won’t because we’ll stay friends even longer. Longer than forever.”
This statement made the older boy weep even harder. With one last kiss to his chubby cheeks, Yuto waved goodbye and left.

Nakajima Yuto never came back. He didn’t even reach his destination as he died in the plane crash. Yamada was devastated; it took him a year before he accepted it. But he knew the last words Yuto had told him was a promise as the younger boy’s spirit continued to live in his heart.
Forever and eternally.
END.

I didn't mean to kill Yuto! I can't even believe I did that. T__T
