shadows and tall trees

84 days until the vernal equinox

There was a deer drinking water from a pond beyond their backyard.

One of the other Japanese Christmas traditions is KFC. Back in the day, that was the only American thing around for Christmas, I guess. Ken made faux KFC but he used soy sauce. And Rachel cried.
Sam learned about bread sauce, which is milk with breadcrumbs in it. The English wouldn't season it even though they conquered half the world to get spices. Sam doesn't think she'd ever eat raw oysters. She said that Michael ate a prairie oyster.
Sam does not recommend covid. It wasn’t as bad as strep but it took longer to get over.
Oscar’s corgi instinct is telling him that everything must be in its proper place at all times.
The snowbabies were all playing instruments but they weren’t facing in the same direction or anything. Lou said maybe those were snowflake cymbals. Sam sung Linda’s porcelain baby song.
Miyazaki is coming out of retirement for the 20th time.
Sam is glad that Japan will probably remain our ally for World War III. It’s basically because the US learned from the mistakes after World War I and instead of punishing Germany and Japan, they rebuilt Japan into a postindustrial powerhouse. It’s kind of the reverse of Argentina, says Rachel, which rediscovered fascism.
Sam recommends watching Andor.
Someone said something and Oscar started barking and I laughed so hard that I couldn’t breathe.

We went on a tour of the lights. There was one neighborhood that had a whole bunch of wooden cutouts of various Christmas-related characters like the Grinch and Cindy Lou Who (voiced by June Foray! I spent the night before Christmas Eve watching Rocky and Bullwinkle play for Wassamatta U’s football team and Boris Badenov trying to fix the games and replacing their football plans with Civil War battle plans. I mean War Between The States battle plans. And speaking of that, Sam and Rachel were talking about celebrities getting the buccal fat removed and I imagine them looking a bit like Fearless Leader) and Jack Skellington, along with the Minions for some reason, and a bunch of displays with Santa Clauses and dolls and beanie babies or whatever.
And then there were the woods. Very dark. Sam said it was where the Krampus lived.
I said “it’s the Lost Woods, from Legend of Zelda.”
Sam said “It’s like the Blair Witch.”
Sam says that Sherborn is luxury wilderness.
There are always memories to be made, she says.

burning question: why do the right get so offended by Happy Holidays? There’s literally a song called Happy Holiday. It’s from 1942. It’s written by Irving Berlin, yes, but still.
