It was raining when he exited the Met that evening, with fifty thousand interstellar credits of cold hard cash warming his pocket. It was always raining on Io-3, but that wasn’t entirely a bad thing -- the constant cloud cover kept the binary star around which the planet orbited from cooking them all to a crisp. It was the humidity that was the real killer: the damp had a way of seeping into everything; made his joints ache where the stumps had been fitted with silicone sockets for the pair of bionic prostheses that enabled him to make a living. The sooner they were off this backwater rock out in the middle of nowhere, the better. They’d been hopping around the fringe colonies for long enough, he figured; it was about time for a change. He briefly entertained the notion of dropping the fresh cash in his pocket on a little twin-engined puddle-jumper, just for the two of them, but just as quickly decided against it. One could have no more certain way of driving away Hibari Kyouya than the notion of commitment.
