My conversation with a former classmate:
HRS kid: Are you not graduating until 08'? I'm stalking you (facebook reference).
Me: Yes I will not be. I run the 5 year club at my school and my housemate is the co-pres.
HRS kid:Cool, how'd that happen?
Me: (I'm thinking, the fuck kind of question is that?) Life happened. Life is more important than school.
HRS kid: Yeah true, we sometimes forget that at our (insert East Coast liberal arts college here) bubble.
Me: I need to exploit the UC System for all of its resources. I studied abroad for a year and I didnt do some of the things I wanted to do in America during that time.
HRS kid: Yea you should do that. Good choice, put off figuring out the rest of life anyways.
Me:I'm not really putting off figuring out the rest of my life.
HRS kid: Fine, I have that problem then.
Me: I just know that there are things to do now and things to accomplish later. No, there is always some confusion (as to what the next step should be) but that usually results from overambition..
Conversation carries on about life, love, and winter break but that comment is still pissing me off.
Me: Do you usually ask people how they ended up with a 5 year plan when college is usually 4 years for most? Hate to bring it up again, but that was sort of a curious and odd question.
HRS kid: I saw you changed it on facebook,as far as i knew you were graduating this year, I havent talked to you so I didnt know what was going on. I also dont really know people who that happens to b/c my college doesn't really let that happen unless you took time off. Sorry. Sorry if I offended or pried.
I leave the conversation to go talk to my roomie, just to make sure that I'm not tripping and that this, in fact, has turned into a conversation that I don't want to be a part of.
HRS kid: You there?
Me: I'm here.
HRS kid: I'm sorry I invaded your privacy, I was unaware I was doing that.
Me: I havent slept in like mad hours, I think im gonna crash now. I'll talk to you a little later.
HRS kid: Alright bye.
