Big update

Another big update.

February

2nd Through a Steam message I found out that Star Trek Online is now Free to play with no monthly charges. I remember trying to apply to the beta for this game back in 2008/2009 but I did not get in. Shortly after that I found out that they were going to make it a monthly charge game so I gave up on it. Now that it is free I thought it was worth taking a look at and it turned out to be a pretty good game. It’s a fairly complex game with a lot of complex equipment & rules to learn so it takes time to figure out how to play the game well. It has a really well made character creation section where you can create characters like in the Elder Scrolls games but with a lot more detail. The parts that I like the most are the long story driven arcs and the duty officer missions. The Duty Officers are basically your general crew for your ship you get a basic picture and description of the attributes and duties of each person then you assign them to mission that appear in various sectors in the game. Based on how well you match them up you will get various rewards and XP if you succeed the mission but if you fail you get nothing and in some cases the officer might end up hurt and put in sickbay or in even killed depending on the severity of the mission you send them on. You get a pack of 20 common officer once you reach a certain level then you get a small pack of 5 officers with some uncommon in them once you reach certain level marks. You can also get 1 uncommon officer once you level a certain field like Diplomacy and you can buy or trade them with other people in the game. In some rare cases you can get them through completing missions as well. I chose an alien race and created my own character and chose the Science profession there is a level 50 cap right now and I’ve reach level 31 (Captain) already. You can also assign bridge officers to your crew that will give you special abilities you can use in space and on the ground. I started out with an Andorian Security officer, a Trill & Vulcan Science officer, & a Klingon engineer.

6th Maer & Meg left for Montreal for Maer’s immigration interview to obtain her green card.

7th Maer went through the interview process and they gave her a sealed package to give to the border people when she went through next time. She was not allowed to open it and they did not tell her the contents of the package.

11th The tactical flashlight that I ordered last month came in and I proceeded to test it out. It looks like it will work real well for the paranormal investigations I go on. The only issues I had with it was that it only works with Windows XP they do not have Windows 7 drivers for it yet.

14th I finally got my 2nd PC at work so I can start on my new software packages job.

20th It was a pretty bad day all around it seemed like everything was going wrong at work and at home. Then my internet connection at home went out at the end of the day I traced it back to my wireless router so I took it off the network and hooked up an old wired switch I had to get it up and working again.

22nd I bought 2012 City XL on steam since it was 75% off. I’ve been looking at this series for awhile now because it looks like an advanced version of Sims. I haven’t had much time to play it yet. I tried the tutorial which was hard to get used to the controls and there is no way to map the controls to different keys which discourages me from playing it more.

23rd Over the winter break I received a Steam coupon for 50% off of a game called Poker Night at the Inventory. I had forgotten about the coupon until I received an email from Steam saying that it was going to expire soon so I got the game for $2. It’s actually a pretty decent poker game and it is funny hearing the characters talking to each other and taunting you. You play against Max from the Sam & Max games, Strong Bad from Homestar Runner, The Heavy from the Team Fortress 2 game, & Tycho from Penny Arcade.

25th I finally got to level 40 in STO which is a Rear Admiral Lower rank. I changed out some of my bridge crew and set up my new ship. I got rid of my Klingon Engineer and replaced him with a Female human engineer who is Japanese decent. Then I got rid of my Vulcan Science officer and replaced him with a male Betazoid officer. I also got a new Alien Security officer who has a dark purple skin tone and is short and stocky. I still have 1 more slot open but I haven’t decided who I should select maybe another science officer.

26th After a couple days of research I was able to get around the internet connection issue I was having. I reset my router & wireless switch then set them up in a DHCP network. I also went out and bought some new dress shoes & a belt.

29th Maer got her passport back with some instructions saying that she would have to re-apply for her green card in another 2 years.

March

1st After reviewing the immigration paper work Maer called the Lawyers to ask them about having to apply again in 2 years. They basically told her that we should have waited till after our 2 year anniversary to submit the paper work and they were sure they told us that (they didn’t) and then proceeded on saying they would file that paper work for us if we paid them another $2400. Suffice it to say we are not going through them anymore.

3rd I finally made it to level 50 (the max) in STO which is Vice Admiral. I started playing the Borg missions in DS9 to get higher level equipment and Borg Doffs to use. I also finally found the rare Duty Officer mission that gives you a very rare bartender from the same race that Guinan is from. Not too long after dinner the power went out on the block for about half an hour I went around the house with the new flashlight and lit some candles in various rooms. I then read a bit on my e-reader until the power came back on.

6th Maer & Meg came down for my Birthday and stayed for about 1 ½ months.

8th we went to Banditos for my birthday with my Mom and Colt. I had my usual Chorizo melt.

9th we watched the Lady in Black movie with Daniel Radcliff. It is a pretty decent show and actually had some good scare scenes in it. Around this time Meg started to come down with a cold. We also played a game I picked up earlier called Dear Esther. It’s a pretty short game maybe about 2 hours but the visuals are really nice and the story line is interesting. Basically you walk around and the story unfolds in front of you while you explore various parts of the island trying to figure out what happen to you.

14th we went to H&R Block to get our taxes done and fill out an ITIN form for Maer so we could file jointly. We went to a Mexican grocery store that was right next to the H&R Block and bought a few things.

15th We went to the bank to get Maer a checking account setup with a debit card and have it linked to my account so I can transfer money to her when needed. When we got home there was a letter in the mail for Maer and it turned out to be her social security card. This was a surprise because she did not apply for one because the lawyers said it was not necessary and that portion of the form was not filled out by us. Just another thing the lawyers screwed up for us. If we had known this was coming it would have made doing the taxes and bank accounts much easier. I immediately called H&R block to schedule a new appointment and put a hold on our tax forms since Maer no longer needed the ITIN form and sending it out would cause issues and delays in getting our refund.

17th We went to Grandmas for her Birthday which was actually on the 15thduring the middle of the week. Most of the family was able to show up and it was a pretty nice day outside too.

18th We spent most of the day outside cleaning out the flower beds and doing yard work.

19th We went back to H&R Block to stop the previous tax forms from being mailed and re-submitted the correct ones. Maer started coming down with a cold.

20th I bought Shogun 2 since it was on sale for $7 and I have been wanting to try this game out for awhile now too since I enjoyed the first one.

22nd I received an email from the company I work with saying I can get MS Office 2010 and Visio 2010 for $10 each so I bought them.

24th We went to B&N in the Mall then tried to find a place to eat but everything was packed so we finally decided on TGIF. After that we went to Best Buy to pick up a new Razor mouse with the Christmas gift cards I had. When retuning home around 8PM I noticed that the mail box was open which was odd since I know the Mail box was closed when we left around 3pm and the mail usually gets here at 1 pm. So I suspected that someone was in our mail again since the post office was already closed I couldn’t file a report with them till Monday.

25th We went to Menards & Meijer to pick up some yard tools, plants, & seeds for the vegetable garden. Maer started sowing some seeds and clearing the ground where she wanted the vegetable garden.

26th I went to the post office to report the open mail box we discovered on the 24th in case something was stolen from our mail box again. From what the post office employee said the mail carrier might have left it open by accident since they were running late that day and they didn’t get back in till around 5PM. I still filed a report with them just in case anything turns up missing.

29th I took half the day off so we could go to the Bank to get a checking account set up for Maer which took some time to figure out. We then went to Olive Garden for lunch which was nice since we don’t normally go early enough to have their lunch specials. Then to Pearl Eye Vision in the Mall to get new glasses for Maer. The exam was $45 and the glasses were $129. The eye doctor let us in the exam room while he was running the tests on Maer’s eyes which was interesting to see from an observer point instead of being in the chair having the tests done on you. Then we stopped by Target to pick up a few things then headed home.

31st I bought Trine since it was on sale for $2 and has been on my wish list for some time now.

April

5th We went back to the bank to get new checks since I ran out and had to use one of Maer’s to pay a bill. We were also having problems with the online transfer system so that needed worked out.

7-8th We worked outside most of the weekend on the vegetable garden removing grass and prepping the ground for plants.

9th Mom & Colt came over while I was at work to visit Maer and Meg. When I came home we watched Memphis Bell.

12th I Pre-ordered Guild Wars 2 for both me and Maer so we could play the Beta weekend events.

15th Went to Best Buy to return the mouse I bought last month since it started to drift. Then we went to the Mall to pick up Maer’s glasses.

16th I discovered Kickstarter and funded the following projects Wasteland 2 video game sequel to an old video game from the 80’s ($15), Blue Blood a very nice deck of playing cards ($11), & Shadowrun Returns the remake of the original Shadowrun game ($15). I also found some other items but decided not to fund them. One was a digital lucid dream mask that is programmed to flash a low level infrared light while you are in REM sleep as a signal to let you know you are dreaming so you can control your dreams better. Another was a board game called Velociraptor! Cannibalism! which is a game you play as a velociraptor that eats various animals for calorie points or you can take parts from those animals and graph them to your body to enhance your abilities. You use your calories to mate and have eggs which hatch into babies which you can also eat too.

19th Maer received her green card today but it had a 2 year expiration date on it. We were hoping that wouldn’t be the case with the message that came with her border package but it looks like we will have to go through this again in 2 years. I also found a nice deal on an antivirus software call ESET that came with 3x 1 year subscriptions for $20.

24th My car started to overheat on the way home from work so when I got home I took a look at the fluids and my engine coolant was almost empty and there was some coolant on the garage floor. So I filled it up with water and took it over to Tuffy’s since they were the closest. The pump blew out and the engine overheated enough to melt/crack the container so that had to be replaced and they also found that one of my support bars was broken and needed to be replaced. They weren’t able to get it all replaced until the

27th so I had to use Maer’s car to get to and from work and it cost me $820 to get everything fixed.

25th I downloaded the Guild wars 2 game and installed it on 3 of the computers so we could play the game for the beta weekend event that coming weekend.

27th-29th We spent most of the weekend playing Guild Wars 2 I created 2 characters a human ranger and a Norn thief. I ended up playing the human ranger most of the weekend and got him to level 15. It’s a pretty fun game and there is a lot of concentration on helping people out when you are in the same area they are in. We ran into some bugs and reported them too.

29th We went to Menard to get more plants for the vegetable garden because some from the last batch died in a frost that happened a few days ago.

30th Tony posted in Facebook that he finally got his new assignment orders and he will be going to Beale AFB near Yuba City, CA.

May

1st Maer & Meg left for Canada

2nd I went to Menards to get more fencing and posts for the vegetable garden. I put a new one up beside the garage and around the vegetable garden then replanted the tomatoes. Grandma Dailey called and invited me to her place for Mothers Day. I asked her if it would be ok if Maer and Meg could stay at their place in Florida while they are down there at the end of May but they had already turned off the utilities and locked up when they left.

5th I planted more in the garden, along the garage, and the front areas. I also took some seeds from a red pepper I bought and sowed them with some seeds I got from the spaghetti squash we grew last year. I also mowed the front and back yard and got slightly sunburn on my arms. I took some pictures of the flowers and the garden area for Maer so she could tell me where things were suppose to go. The strawberries were starting to ripen already and I’ve picked about 20.

7th I order the Tsuro board game from a place called Sci-Fi-City off Amazon for $25 and when I received it there was a free Mage Knights clicks figure in the box which was a nice surprise.

8th I ordered an ATI HD 6770 Video card for $99 to upgrade my PC. I did this mostly to bump my ATI HD 5770 card to Maer’s PC so GW2 will play better.

9th I took a few hours off at the end of my work day to go to the dentist. It’s sad that I was looking forward to being at the dentist more than being at work. I also went to battle.net and bought Diablo 3 so I could play it once it comes out on the 15th. The white peonies that I planted for Maer last year actually bloomed this year they normally take a few years to set in before they bloom. I took some pictures of them and sent them to Maer.

10th I finally broke down and bought the left side desk extension for the desks I have downstairs. I also found a good deal on office chairs and bought 2 of them so we will have 4 nice chairs at desks downstairs. While on Kickstarter I discovered that the original group that made Carmageddon bought the rights to the game back and they are going to re-make the game and call it Carmageddon: Reincarnation. I went ahead and funded the project for $15 so I could get the basic game once it’s released.

12th I cleaned out the gutters and cleaned/sprayed off the patio then I planted the shade garden flowers. I went over to Best Buy to get a new mouse but they no longer carried the one I wanted so I went to their web page where they still had them in stock and bought one plus it was $10 off.

13th First I went to Grandma Daily’s for Mothers Day and let her, Dad, & Brenda know about Tony coming back to the States in October (they don’t have internet so any new from tony usually comes from me). I also showed Grandma some recent pictures of Tony and his family that he put up on Facebook. I gave Grandma and Brenda their mother days cards Maer picked up while she was here last. Then I went over to Grandma Caylor’s to see Mom & give them bother their Mother’s day cards too. I picked up some more Iris’s, a fern, snow drops, Daisies, & 3 more Hosta from grandma’s place. I bought Portal 2 for $7.50 and the Commando series of games for $3.

14th I received the 2 new office chairs and moved them down to the basement to unpack and put together later.

15th I was not doing too well this morning and called work to take the day off. I tried to play Diablo 3 but the servers were down for maintenance so I watched the intro’s to the difference characters. I built a quick cage to put around the strawberries since the birds were getting into them. I had to shoo away 2 birds already since I’ve put the cage up. The cage will work for now but I need to find something more permanent for later. I received the mouse I order from Best Buy today and tested it on Diablo 3 once it was back up. I started with the male monk and I have gotten to the beginning of Act 2 now. I tried to flash the bios in my PC because the bios version I had would not support 3TB hard drives but the latest version would. After it booted back up it came to a flashing command prompt and would not go any further. I tried a few different things to see if I could fix the issue but it was getting late and I had to attempt to get to work tomorrow.

16th Maer & Meg left for PA on their trip down to Florida to see some friends. I was still not feeling well but went to work anyways. When I got home I tried a few other fixes on my PC but they didn’t work then I pulled my secondary hard drive out and it worked fine. For some reason the Bios swapped my hard drive orders around and it wouldn’t continue onto the next drive to boot from. So I went into the bio and moved them back into the right order. I will have to reformat my primary boot hard drive for it to recognize all 3Tbs but I will do that at another time. As a distraction I watched some Night Court and put together 1 of the office chairs I got the other day.

17th I bought Rock Band 3 with keyboard for $40 it was on sale at Target’s website the set usually goes for $130.

Well that’s my update for now looks like just over 3600 words this time. LOL
