Seabee Summer Fun

Wow, it certainly has been quite some time since I last updated my journal!  Thus, I should start this entry by appologizing for not updating in nearly two months!

At any rate...It's now June, which means that classes at MSU have been out for nearly a month now (my last exam was on May 11), so I am back down on the Gulf Coast with my family for the summer.  In case you might be wondering what I chose to do this summer, I chose to do one of the things I was considering last summer.  Are you still wondering what exactly I'm talking about?  I'm working over at the Naval Construction Batallion Base (Seabee Base) in Gulfport with their Youth Program, employed by their Morale, Welfare, and Recreation department (MWR).  I started working about a week after classes let out and have had an excellent time there so far.  There are about eight of us that work at the Youth Center and most of my co-workers happen to be female, except for a couple of the people that come in for the afternoon and evening shifts.  May 30 was the beginning of the summer program and for the summer MWR brought in a group called "Camp Adventure" from the University of Northern Iowa to provide eight counselors.  The original push for this came from the fact that Stennis Space Center (run by NASA) had a summer program and was going to send children over, but this contract fell through, but only after the base agreed to have CA come down.  On top of that, MWR is seeking accreditation for their summer program, which requires that they have electives and rotating activities, which CA knows how to do (much like Camp Stanislaus tried the last year I worked there).  Things changed when we switched over to the summer program, and now it's devided into groups of ages 5-7, 8-9, and 10-12, but I work with what's called the "Modular Unit," comprised of children of all age groups.  My group was created as an overflow group because of the extreme interest in child care during the summer months.  However, we are planning to phase the group out as spaces in the other groups open up by moving the children down into their own age groups, but we'll just have to see how that works.  I am, however, enjoying working on the Navy Base since, as a base employee, I get to take advantage of tax free restaurants, stores, and cheaper gas stations!

For those who may be wondering how my grades were this past semester, especially considering that I took 18 hours, I managed to once again pull off a 4.00, making A's in all of my classes.  I will be taking 18 hours next semester, and with that I will be ready to graduate this coming December!

As for other things that have been going on lately, I have been spending time with my family lately...My grandfather had to go to the emergency room the other day because apparently he had cellulitus, but now he is doing fine thanks to the antibiotics they gave him.

I have been playing the "Wonder Boy" video games, which were on the SEGA consoles (Master System and Genesis/Mega-Drive), with a couple on the Arcade and Turbografix-16.  I recently completed "Wonder Boy III: The Dragon's Trap" (1989) and am currently working on "Wonder Boy in Monster World" (1991), which I recently ordered on eBay.  An interesting thing to note about the series is that the first game, simply titled "Wonder Boy" (SMS, 1986) is what most people know as "Adventure Island."  The game was originally created by SEGA and Westone in 1986, but Nintendo liked the idea and made a deal with Westone to port the game over, change the character to Master Higgins, and the game became "Adventure Island" on the NES later that year.

We also went to see "Poseidon," a remake of "The Poseidon Adventure" (1972) which turned out to be a very good, action-packed movie.  I recommend it if you haven't seen it, and I'd give it an A-.  The other movie that I've seen so far this summer is "The DaVinci Code," which turned out to be an excellent movie.  Despite one's belief on the notion that the movie sets forth, it is a movie whose action is much along the lines of 2004's "National Treasure," and therefore it deserves an A all the way.

Well, everything has been going well so far.  As such, I will end this long entry here!  I hope everyone's summer (well, technically it's still Spring) is going well so far.

Adieu for now!
