some TV thoughts

"Masterpiece: Mystery": How weird is it that I might request "Inspector Lewis" for yuletide? With Lewis/Hobson as the main pairing, maybe with bisexual Hathaway on the side? I am always telling rheanna27 that Oxford looks VERY dangerous.

"Hawaii 5-0": This kind of turned me off this week, between the realization that nobody's thought a whole lot about characterizing Kono beyond "hot chick" and the gratuitous torture scene meant to make me think Steve is really bad-ass. It made me think Steve was an asshole. I can go for basically brainless, fun, procedural shows, but not if I don't love the characters! And now I don't love Steve.

"Glee": Is it just me, or have they been ON this year? While the "Britney/Brittany" episode was nowhere near as sharp as the Madonna hour last year, I loved the showcase for Heather Morris, who I already knew was a fabulous dancer, but DAMN. And I know a lot of people think they overuse Sue, but Jane Lynch is basically riding a flaming chariot of awesome across the sky, and the show is right to harness it whenever and wherever they can.

And I love Coach Bieste! People are writing Sue/Bieste, right? RIGHT?

"Undercovers": Although this hour started with some of the same flaws as last week -- too-slow pacing, soft characterization for the leads -- after the halfway mark, I saw glimpses of the show this can be. Right now, they're playing both Steven and Samantha as essentially straight men (comedically, not sexually, though more on that in a second), which means they come alive when the show slips into ensemble mode. Leo Nash, who didn't do tons for me in the pilot, was delightful in this -- funny, sexy and basically carrying a blinking sign saying I HAVE HAD SEX WITH BOTH OF THESE PEOPLE. With a tinier sign that says SEPARATELY. NOT AT THE SAME TIME. YET. Hoyt is clearly a comic foil, but he can develop as a multidimensional one. The further hints about Steven's darker past will no doubt be spun into good plot threads soon. Also, the program seems to have reached a fuller understanding of the fact that these people need to remove their clothes a lot. Leo included! They are definitely still finding the tone here, but they can find it. And the potential OT3ness of Steven/Samantha/Leo, it intrigues. Little ficlet ideas are popping up all over.

Totally exhausted. Headed to bed.
