For some reason, it was only yesterday that I realized Memorial Day weekend was upon us. I am sooooo looking forward to a three-day weekend with only one social event to attend. "If you would clarify, Minister, to what disadvantage are you referring?" Spock inquires. He has inferred the meaning, is unable to conceive of any other supposed disadvantage that could possibly be meant, but it is only logical to verify this opinion, and ensure he makes this most important decision based on fact.
"Your human mother," the minister answers.
Spock allows no outward response to the slight. He is no longer a child, to be goaded into a fistfight when someone insults his mother. He waits for a response from his father, one who surely has a right to object to Mother being called a disadvantage, but his father remains silent. Whatever you choose to be, you will have a proud mother, echoes in Spock's mind, his mother's soft voice somehow louder in memory than the insults from the Vulcans that he can't help but hear over and over. Despite your disadvantage...a human whore.
"Council, Ministers, I must decline," Spock says, and the serenity that he experiences at that moment reaffirms that he's made the logical decision.
The minister is not able to wholly conceal his shock. "No Vulcan has ever declined admission to this Academy."
"As I am half-human, your record remains untarnished."
"Spock, you have made a commitment to honor the Vulcan way," Father points out.
"Why did you come before this Council today? Was it to satisfy your emotional need to rebel?" the minister demands before Spock can reply.
"The only emotion I wish to convey is gratitude," he answers. "Thank you, ministers, for your consideration." He glances at his father. "Live long and prosper."
