Star Trek Reboot Drabble Challenge, Mark II

For some reason, it was only yesterday that I realized Memorial Day weekend was upon us. I am sooooo looking forward to a three-day weekend with only one social event to attend. There will be much writing of fanfic and sitting around in sweats. Lolling and indolence! The three weeks after that are going to be INSANE, so I think the indolence is ( Read more... )

Leonard McCoy liked the Earth.

Solid. Safe. Stable, at least the part he was from. His parents took him on the usual hops when he was a kid - a moon trip, DisneyMars - and he hated every second from launch to landing. The cold vacuum of space terrified him; he didn't see the point of anyplace without air.

No, he planned to stay right there in Georgia for the rest of his days. Jocelyn liked the mild winters, and they owned an antique-style house with a porch and a swing, and with the new Peachtree Transporter Hub station so close, his commute to Johns Hopkins/Vethomir Medical took about twenty minutes door-to-desk. What more could anyone ask?

Well, it turned out you could ask your wife not to fall out of love with you. Maybe you could have asked yourself to cut down on the Jack Daniels, which might have helped with the whole falling-out-of-love issue. You could also have asked more friends for recommendations about their divorce lawyers, so you could've gotten a pit bull instead of a lap dog.

McCoy had thought to remain in Georgia anyway. So what if he was broke, and Jocelyn got almost all their friends in the divorce? Little Joanna was there, and it wasn't like you could get a decent mint julep north of Kentucky, anyway.

But Georgia had become scorched earth to him in a way it must not have been since Sherman passed through. Jocelyn remarried - decent enough guy, from what McCoy could tell - but seeing Joanna bond with him was just too much to bear.

One day he knew he had to get away, and get as far away as possible. Even if it meant facing his greatest fear and leaving Earth behind.

The more McCoy fics I read the more I love him, and this is absolutely no exception. Short and (bitter)sweet.

Oh, Bones. That's so hard to bear. No wonder he got up and faced that fear head on.

(Also, DisneyMars! So brilliant!)

Beautiful *and* painful. Loved it to bits, and it seems like him in a nutshell.

Oh, poor Bones. Though facing one's fears isn't always a bad thing! I really like this.

Thank you! It's kind of awesome that somebody so freaked out by space travel winds up being a great adventurer.
