So, I'll have to admit to some degree that I have been a little "lazy" in tackling a job search... yes, I have my degree and want to use my degree and didn't spend all that money on nothing, however it has seemed like such a LARGE task! Yes, all hard work brings a profit, I think that my problem has been that marketing and sales are such broad sectors in the business market, that I have been having to do some soul-searching and trying to figure out what parts(s) of the processes I would like to dabble in. I have always thought it would be interesting to work on product development, sales, and implementation, but the truth is that unless I work in a VERY small firm, there is no way I am going to be able to see the process from start to finish. For awhile I thought I wanted to go into advertising, but as I have done more research and personal assessments, I think I would be happier in other markets. I have been unsure as to what industry I want to try to focus on as well, such as media, sports, entertainment, or more traditional sales. There are also opportunities in retail, hospitality, and event planning and management. I also have experience from high school in the transportation industry and really enjoyed that and am not sure if I would want to look into that further as well! Totally exciting, but I have felt in the past three months (can't believe it's been that long already!) that I have needed to do some personal soul searching and get my confidence back up to be adequately prepared to showcase myself to prospective and future employers. The other thing that is starting to worry me a little as well has been the talks about a recession as well as changes in business and purchasing/buying patterns and numbers.
So as I start to really get in deep into things, I have been thinking about ways to make me stand out from the typical cover letter and resume and I'm not quite sure what to do. I've been thinking about sending out gadgets or little promo stuff with my name and phone number on them. I am also unsure as to how to best showcase my work, as I feel like I have a lot of smaller projects and things that are related to my coursework but not able to be described on my resume... any pointers/ideas? I have thought about doing some kind of PowerPoint thing where it has some work and explanations and a small video of myself kind of talking about it...? I have also been wanting to professionally print some of my course work from this past summer (my sports marketing class and personal work for Copeland's). I haven't thought of the best way to organize all my projects and things however to make it easy to showcase on job interviews. I am also not sure if I should include any writings and things like that...? *sigh* I'm upset that I worked so hard and then let my last semester slip as much as I did. Oh well, you can't go back and change anything and the only thing it's really going to effect is my first career move anyway. From those who are out in the market already, would you recommend trying to work for a large company (like Coke, Chick-fil-A, Turner, etc.) or start small and try to move up?
I have found some postings on Turner that I wan to apply to but they want me to include a project and I am not sure what I should include with that... I should copy the posting and see if anyone else has any ideas!
Again, all I have been up to this week is working. Not any real new news. I have gotten some more work done on my car, and they told me that I need to get new breaks... I'm hoping that I can get that done by the end of the month. Hopefully that will be the last of the car expenses for awhile, although I know that my car is getting older and has been a very good car for me. The breaks are solely my fault however and the way that I've driven. I didn't end up going to the Flyers game on Tuesday because of the weather and because everyone else backed out on me (and I didn't feel like going alone) but I still watched it on TV and it was a decent game... no fights though.
Ohhh! My younger cousins might be coming to visit the weekend of Easter and I'm so excited about that! I've been writing my cousin now for a few years and we've hung out a little bit during the summers, but I haven't been able to hang out for long due to school the past few summers, so I'm really looking forward to getting to spend some time with them!
