A combination of various things. Being the Mistress of the Tome of the Night Sky, she would not awaken until all the pages were completed - filled by absorbing the Linker Cores of other mages. In some ways, it was my fault that Mistress Hayate became unstable. Seeing her knights compromised by her friends threw her into a frenzy, and the defensive program was initiated. Normally, it would not have reacted this way, but my program was corrupted. This was the reason behind what you saw, as well as why my Mistress was so ill. In order to sustain myself, I thrived upon her energy, another side-effect to the corruption.

And I fear that, if nothing is done, that this very well could happen again..
