Clearly he's protecting her. Because it makes sense that she'd know him from before. And thus she was scared and going to him. And he's currently trying to keep her away from Neal so she doesn't screw up his chance at making a new life for himself.

The ring is clearly the class ring for the FBI or something....

I said to my brother "What the hell is up with that ring?!"

I'm pretty sure he can't be evil, I mean they would literally be blowing up their show in the first season...not generally recommended.

So a thought occurred to me based on what you said, do you think Peter is attempting to reform Neal by having him give up all his stolen stuff which would explain why Kate was never specific.

There's so much more to Peter than he lets on

I also have an alternate theory, that's not actually Peter but his evil Twin!

Also Jeff Eastin tweeted after that episode saying things along the lines of "it isn't what it seems" and "think. How did Peter know where Kate was in the first episode?"

I think that right now, Neal trusts Peter. If Peter really wanted or cared about a past object, he could give Neal a half decent reason and ask him outright. Neal will hedge and avoid and dodge, but you dont' see him outright lie to Peter.

I liked the theory that that wasn't Kate, but Elizabeth in a wig =P
