MOUTAIN, GOATS?

i finished watching ken burns JAZZ and i've decided to dedicate my life to that type of music. not quite immediately, though elements of it are discernible in many of the things that i do or play. but i'm going to use a band like the difference engine which is playing the current popular style of music (rock and roll) and continue to hone my chops in it and do exciting things in that genre, so eventually i can gety out and do the sort of thing that really touches me. whatever the next kind of jazz is i think its trapped inside me and the more i learn about music the higher i will be able to take it on an intellectual and musical level. it will be acoustic based stuff, and once the difference engine is popular, any thing i do on the side will be more likely to be noticed. itll play the same circuits. keep in mind thhat it has been and will continue to be my aspiration to lead a big band incorporating all of musical history and every sound i like. but i've got to work my way up to it if i want to make the new music popular.
i am a composer at heart. rock and roll is like something ive got to do and conquer and get out of the way...

would anyone like to come with me to go see the mountain goats in new orleans on april 9th (this saturday) at the house of blues? only 67 or 8 dollars and john darnielle is the most amazing songwriter around.

my parents go back to work tomorrow that means i will restart intensive hiphop album work. everything i'm not writing here is going into that, and i am constructing music in a totally different way, able to use just the pieces that i write to songs (i always either write songs in pieces, or as accompaniment of one melodic line to another. this hiphop is totally based around that in the playing of loops.)

i played a practice with a new band, sena's new band. kind of a sideproject supergroup of people in other bands. it is really amazing and i like the sounds of it alot. if i play with it i will most likely be playing bass (which ive been doing as long as ive played guitar with sean, as we've always switched instruments). frees me up from exclusively noise making. so i just get to swing, to concentrate on rhythm (which is the purpose of most of my guitar playing anyway). i also will try to play trombone since i have most recently purchased one. other members of the band are
sean (difference engine)- guitar
blakely (xbxrx, stuck ups) - keyboard, bass, vocals?
steve (fma, 1000th man, nuees) - guitar, keyboard?
michael (xbxrx, 1000th man, nuees) - drums
erin (necrofold) - vocals, drums
maybe jonathan parish (selfish gene) - bass?? (wasnt at practice though)

so far it sounds very free form and mathy and polyrhythmic, each instrument doing these little stabs so it goes together in a very confusing yet danceable and absorbing whole. like uh measles mumps rubella. or mike and i just play tourettes by nirvana and everybody else watches. the keyboards are awesome though! very free.
the music scene is so incestuous (in terms of bands). but its like living out the dreams of playing with your heroes. miles playing with bird, coltrane playing with miles, etc. us giddy schoolboys playing with the xb's and nueesies.

also part of the reason i am a composer is because i perceive any musical piece as a whole and in terms of all the different sounds going together. that's why i write different parts to overlap each other even though i can't hear it, and why i can and try to play every instrument.

besides all that i have some major life changed stories and interesting tales about prarie dog butts and dressing like a gay cowboy and stealing somebody's toast at a bar. i will tell them in brief forms later, as though they were children's story books. and the difference engine is going to play a song from Jesus Christ Superstar soon. i am gonna try to be a preacher for at least one show, see how many people i can convince that instead of gettin LAID, they need to get SAVED. ive already got the gibbering in tongues part down.

i'm writing megan a really lengthy letter.

MAMA YOU ALWAYS BEEN GOOD TO ME
BUT I AINT ALWAYS BEEN GOOD TO YOU
THAT IS WHY I AM HERE TO NITE
TO LET YOU KNOW I LOVE YOU

HOW YOU LIKE THAT FLORIDA

gotta get me one of them suits.
