2.) This is sort-of short again? Next chapter should be full of things and will be the end of Tomodachi's arc :D It's half-done already so expect it soon!

Chapter 7: When The Mask Breaks

Another day, another challenge. Shida inhaled in the fresh air and continued walking towards the hallway of their school. It was a bright and sunny day, a day that promises a good time. Yuu-sensei asked Jingi to tell her that she should go to the Principal's office as soon as she arrives in the school. Normal students would be scared, but she wasn't of course. Yuu-sensei was a father figure for her even before being a prinicipal.

She rapped her fist on the door lightly as she arrived in front of the room. A soft 'come in' was heard from inside the room.

"Good morning, Yuu-sensei." She greeted upon entering the room. She stopped in the middle of the room when she saw what was happening though.

Hiharu, in her usual white sundress, was sitting in front of the principal's desk. "Ah!" She smiled widely upon spotting Shida. "Good morning, Shida Mirai."

On his usual seat was Yuu-sensei, smiling widely as well. "You've met Hiharu-chan, haven't you? Sit down here." He motioned to the chair beside Hiharu. "Mirai-chan cut all her classes yesterday, didn't you?"

She bit her lip in nervousness and slowly looked away, wondering if the principal had a punishment for her all ready. "Um, I'm sorry, Yuu-sensei." She looked down and bowed a little.

A chuckle from Yuu made her look up. "I don't think it's okay, as a principal. You should be given proper sanction. But before being a principal, I'm Ryunosuke's father." He took a small paper slip from his drawer and extended it to her. "So for now, I'll excuse you." As Shida took the paper, he added, "Just for this day though."

A wide smile replaced her nervous expression. "Thank you very much!"

Hiharu bowed down as well. "Thank you very much!"

"Hm?" Shida looked at her with a curious expression.

The other girl grinned and showed a small slip in her hand too. "Yuu-chan is a good earthling." She then stood up and bowed before walking away.

All Shida could do was stare as she disappeared and closed the door behind her. "Anou..."

Another chuckle erupted from Yuu. "Hiharu is such a nice child, isn't she? But she has some... issues. As a doctor, I allowed her to enroll in my school so I could watch over her."

"Like how you do with Mikki?" Shida asked, suddenly realizing the fact that everyone was accepting Mikki and all his personalities. It was weird, wasn't it?

Yuu smiled gently. "Our school allows mainstreaming of students with special needs. Since I am a medical doctor, I was given a permit to do this... That's why Ryunosuke and Hiharu can skip class or attend class whenever they want to."

....

After talking some more minutes with Yuu, she jogged back to the hallway to see if she could catch up to Hiharu. Luckily, the other girl was leisurely walking and looking around so it wasn't hard to follow.

"Hiharu-chan!" She called out, walking up to her.

The girl smiled widely and nodded her head in greeting. "Shida Mirai. We meet again."

She giggled at that. "Are you going to the rooftop? Let's go together!"

Hiharu simply nodded and started looking around again.

A comfortable silence emerged between them as they started walking the stairs towards the rooftop. Soon after though, Shida found herself asking Hiharu more about Tomodachi. She thinks Hiharu would be a good guide on how to handle Tomodachi's personality.

"Ne, Hiharu-chan, when did you start going to the rooftop?" she asked.

The other girl looked at her with those large searching eyes. "Tomodachi fell from the sky. That was when I first met him. He had red spots. He was a Martian."

"Fell from the sky? Red spots?" Shida frowned, not quite understanding what Hiharu wanted to say.

"April 2007." was her only answer as she opened the door to the rooftop. There, waiting for them, was Tomodachi with the usual mask on his face and the familiar get-up.

He looked at them and said "Kuriru"

Shida bowed and said "Kuriru" back at him. It was his form of greeting, she realized. She sat beside Tomodachi and Hiharu and they all watched the sky together.

It was comfortable and it felt peaceful to just sit there like that. Shida thinks it would be nice if they could stay this way.

...

Days passed just like that, except Shida had to go to class now and only stayed in the rooftop during lunch time. Lunch became a special occassion for her. Every stress she felt from school disappears as soon as she sees the blue sky and Tomodachi's slouching back. It felt as if this world would always be okay as long as she's staying there.

A week since Tomodachi appeared, Shida was on the rooftop again like usual. But the only difference was that she had a bento today, since her father especially made it for her (because he had the time to make one). This was when she realized it: Tomodachi never eats anything during lunch or any part of the day when she sees him.

"Do you want a bite, Tomodachi-kun?" Shida asks.

He doesn't look back at her and simply stares at the sky. "Shakro."

She looks at her lunch box, then at his back. Slowly, her eyes glossed over as a memory took her by surprise.

...
..
.

Shida and Kamiki were both lying on the grass beside their grade school. They were both barely eight years old then. Young and free, playing around whenever they want.

"Ne, when we become High School students, wouldn't it be cool if I would fetch you to and from school?" Kamiki had his hands behind his head, looking at the sky as he spoke.

She laughed at that, not even able to imagine him growing up just yet. He looked and acted like a five year old child, and imagining him maturing was just weird. "We live near each other so it won't be special at all."

"Mou..." He pouted. "Then, we would go at the rooftop and eat together. You'd eat your packed lunch and I would eat Yakisoba bread by the side, looking like the coolest guy in the school." He nodded, as if satisfied with the image.

She giggled once again, laughing so much for a whole minute. "Mikki..." She couldn't stop her giggles. "You're weird as always." She rolled to her side and looked at him. "Normally, boys would dream of bentos made by girls they like. But you're imagining Yakisoba bread?!"

He pouted again and glanced at her. "But it would look cool!"

"Hai, hai." She sighed resignedly. "That would be nice."

.
..
...

She immediately stood up. "Tomodachi-kun, I'll be back! Wait for me okay?"

He seemed to have nodded.

Hiharu looked up at her but did not ask where she was going.

She ran as fast as she could, fearing that lunch time will soon be over. She reached the cafeteria and bought two pieces of Yakisoba bread and one pack of juice. A huge smile was on her face as she ran back up the rooftop. She ignored the weird looks they were giving her. This was a special experiment that could lead some interesting results.

Tomodachi was by the side of the door, looking at the stairs instead of the sky, when she arrived. He did wait for her. What a nice guy.

"Here!" She pushed the bread and juice at him. "You have to eat or else you'll look like a skeleton."

He stood there, yakisoba bread in hand, not moving at all.

"It's pointless, Shida Mirai. He doesn't eat Earth food too. He'll be contaminated." Hiharu spoke from her side of the rooftop.

A few seconds later though, with Shida poking at him and saying "Eat it?" repeatedly, he nodded. He sat on the edge of the rooftop and raised his mask by a bit, just above his mouth.

Slowly, he ate the bread without even looking back at them.

Hiharu sat up in shock. "Tomodachi ate it! Tomodachi ate it! He ate Earth Food!" She pointed at him as if proving her point to Shida.

Shida laughed. "He did, didn't he?"

The other girl looked at her with wide admiring eyes. "You're a great earthling, Shida Mirai. Tomodachi likes you."

Hearing that, Shida smiled her biggest smile yet ever since she arrived here.

...

"You're working hard, aren't you?" A voice greeted behind her. Shida looked up to see Jingi and Shougo smiling at her. "Will you go there this lunch too?" Shougo asked.

She smiled. "Of course. I've got to do my best!"

Kanata appeared on the door, looking bored. "You're producing noise this early?" he asked as he passed by her.

"Good morning to you too, Kanata-san." This was a routine for her, so she never gets angry at him anymore. It was sort of cute, anyway. He was hospitable enough whenever Aki wasn't involved so it was just funny for Shida when he acts all bored or cold.

The two other boys grinned at her comeback and sat at their respective seats.

"Ah..." Kanata looked at her and whispered a foreboding "Take care of yourself, Shida Mirai."

"What?" She stared at him and waited for an answer but he kept quiet until the teacher arrived.

...

It was like any other day, she thought as she walks to the stairs. It was like any other day but she was not bored at all. Her routine made her feel calm, unlike the time when she was around Aki (who always made her feel tensed before).

These were her thoughts as she opened the door to the rooftop.

But this day wasn't like any other day. When she opened the door, Tomodachi wasn't looking at the sky nor was Hiharu lying on the floor. What welcomed her was not the welcoming presence of her weird friends.

It was the back of four boys who had her friends cornered. Fear was in Hiharu's eyes. The two were soaked from head to toe. It seemed like the four threw water at them.

Tension was in the air. The four guys were laughing mockingly.

"OI!" She couldn't stop herself. Anger was coarsing through her veins. She ran and pushed at them to reach her friends. "What are you doing?!" She yelled, glaring at each of them.

One of the boys, the smallest out of the three, laughed at her. "Acting all big, Shida Mirai?"

The biggest and the meanest-looking out of the three laughed as well. "The wanna-be weirdo wants to be a guardian for the aliens, huh? You're so small but you speak like you can take all of us!"

"I will protect my friends, that's what I'd do!" She may not be a karate expert but she had the brains anyway. She'll give Hiharu and Tomodachi a chance to escape. It seemed a little bit easier in her mind. She decided to stall them first and gauge their anger. "Why are you doing this, anyway?"

The smallest grinned and said "Kamiki Ryunosuke is a boastful rich brat who should just jump off this building. He should really just die."

"Why would you go this far?!" She extended her hands on both direction so as to shield them. Hiharu clutched onto her blouse, shivering in fear. Her hand looked bruised. Did they hurt her already? "You won't get anything through this, you know?"

"It's our public service to rid this world of contaminated people like these guys." He pointed haughtily at her two friends. "Aki orders us around as if he owns the world, just like how his other personalities would walk around like they're the best people in the world. This school doesn't need that guy."

Her eyes narrowed. "You know what this school doesn't need? JERKS LIKE YOU." She pointed at each of them as she said it word per word. Her anger was at its peak. Trash like these people shouldn't have the right to even approach Tomodachi and Hiharu. They were innocent and pure, unlike these guys. "You're just jealous of Kamiki and you're afraid of Aki! You think you can push Tomodachi around just because he doesn't fight back! Cowards! Jerks! Useless!" She was irritated beyond anything.

The boys looked at her with wide eyes, anger slowly appearing on their expressions. "You...!" The largest guy charged towards her, pushing her to the side harshly.

"Mirai-chan!" Hiharu had her eyes wide as she watched Shida fall at the side, her head bumping the hard concrete with a loud thud. Shida was unconscious.

The smallest guy's eyes widened. "AH! This is bad!" He looked at both his friends before trying to run away.

He wasn't able to run away fast enough though. Tomodachi had taken hold of the back of his collar, pulling him harshly.

"Don't run away now." Tomodachi used his left hand to take off his mask. "The person you're looking for isn't here anymore. I'm the one who'll entertain you."

Hiharu simply stared in fear as this unfolded in front of her. She was shaking from head to toe. "Mi-mirai-chan..." She decided to kneel beside Shida to check on her instead. "Mirai-chan?" There was no sound from her. "Tomodachi-kun! Shida Mirai is...!"

Tomodachi looked at her with gleaming eyes. "Go down and call Yuu-sensei, Hiharu."

She nodded and ran away, evading the other boys who could not move because of fear. They felt as if they just cracked something that they shouldn't have touched in the first place.

"Now, should we have fun?" The voice was dark and full of evil intent. Was this the real Tomodachi?

Personally liked this chapter :D Maybe because I've been stressed and needed an immediate outlet. That means I was on a high when I wrote this, basically xD
