“I have a theory,” she whispered into the empty space between them, dropping her book on the bedside table because the promise of its distraction wasn’t all that distracting anymore.

Her husband glanced at the novel, Love in the Arms of a Stranger, before giving her a brief nod and returning to the business section of his newspaper. That was as much notice as she got on the first try.

Kagome sighed, tucking her hand beneath her chin and staring at him like she hadn’t seen him every day for the past five years. Nervously, she fidgeted and played with the wavy strands of black hair that slipped over her shoulders, barely caressing the top of her camisole. “Sesshoumaru,” her voice raised as she leaned toward him.

“Yes,” he replied, not bothering to pause in his reading. “What is it?”

“Do you love me?” Kagome asked, teeth snagging her lower lip and fingers tightening in the sheets.

He turned the page before responding. “Of course.”

“Do you mean it as much now as you did when you first said it?”

“Kagome,” his knuckle dipped down to mark his place, and he neatly folded the paper in half and reached out to place his freed hand over hers. “Do not ask such impractical questions.”

Sesshoumaru brushed a light kiss over her forehead and returned his attention to the news.

Kagome stared at him for a few more lost moments. ‘You didn’t answer my question,’ she thought to herself but didn’t bother saying aloud because she couldn’t stand the thought of needing reassurances.

But she did, and he wasn’t giving them.

‘I have a theory,’ she reflected. ‘I have a theory that the world doesn’t revolve around you and me like it used to. I have a theory that you don’t love me like you used to… but maybe that’s just me.

…What’s wrong with me?’

With a resigned huff, Kagome switched off her bedside lamp and slumped down in the blankets, turning on her side to face the wall. “Goodnight. Don’t forget to turn off the alarm before you leave in the morning.”

A light ‘hn’ was the only response she received.

‘I have a theory…’

A/N 2: This would have been an update to EI if that chapter would stop being so damn fickle.
