Creative Writing Class day 5

Poetry night!

To be creative, you have to become a child again.

Put yourself out there. Keep your receptors open while reading.

Writers Market - this is the bible of the publishing world
How to Write a Book Proposal - this is a book to help when contacting a publisher

When you submit, it should be "camera ready." Completely edited many times.
Woe is I - great editing book

Submitting to a magazine - submit with a cover letter with who you are and why you are qualified

Attach a synopsis when sending to an agent.

Book proposal is usually the first three chapters. Add what books are like your book and how yours is different.

Artists borrow from each other. That's how creativity works.

Commas are important. They tell you where to pause, like a tone change in music.

Poetry gets our soul on the page faster than any other kind of writing.

We didn't do any free writing for this class but we did have to bring in a favorite poem. Mine was Where the Sidewalk Ends by Shel Silverstein. I think this poem pretty much defines by childhood and it was one of the first poems I ever read.

There is a place where the sidewalk ends
And before the street begins
And there the grass grows soft and white
And there the sun burns crimson bright
And there the moon-bird rests from his flight
To cool in the peppermint wind.

Let us leave this place where the smoke blows black
And the dark street winds and bends
Past the pits where asphalt flowers grow
We shall walk with a walk that is measured and slow
And watch where the chalk-white arrows go
To the place where the sidewalk ends.

Yes we'll walk with a walk that is measured and slow
And we'll go where the chalk-white arrows go
For the children, they mark, and the children, they know
The place where the sidewalk ends.
