Yeah, but the thing is, it wasn't the higher echelons of CTU telling Tony to keep secrets from his wife and shut her out, it was Bauer.

Just like Jack was the only one telling Michelle the Cyprus recording was fake. Same thing, except she wasn't involved with Tony yet. But nonetheless, Jack asked her not to tell anybody and that's what she did. In both cases, I do think they believed in what the were doing. But still, they ultimately did it because Jack told them to.

And that's the hypocrisy of the show, not that of the characters. If Jack goes behind everybody's back, he's a hero. If Tony does it, he's a traitor. That's why the damn show got so frustrating, cause whatever Jack did was awesome (even if it was totally disgusting) and whatever any other character did had serious consequences (even if it wasn't nearly as bad as anything Jack did).

I still stand by my opinioin that Jack is nothing but a dumb bullying psycho with double standards for everything. And since I generally like smart characters on TV, no surprise I went for Tony and Michelle instead of Jack "numbnut" Bauer. :D

I think the reason it was like that was because other characters were starting to surpass Jack in popularity. I know it sounds biased, but Palmer, Tony, Michelle, all were EXTREMELY popular with people and let's face it, 24 is Jack Bauer, plain and simple.

And yeah I agree it's stupid the way they handled it.

YES! YES! YES! I LOVE YOU! Thank you, usually I get hated on for saying exactly this!

But it's a clear pattern - look at the characters they killed off: Tony, Michelle, Palmer, Bill - and ultimately, Renee. Even though, with the storyline they gave Renee for season 8, I was almost glad she was dead so they couldn't put her through more crap.

And then I have people telling me they only killed to prove that everybody could die and to shock the audience. WRONG! Everybody could get hurt and/or die, except for Jack. Also, it's not much of a shocker when the next popular character gets killed.

let's face it, 24 is Jack Bauer

Yeah, but I liked the show it was when "24" stood for a great ensemble and not some one-man show with convenient side-dish guest-stars who cost a fortune (i.e. Jon Voight). I loved the show that had totally unknown actors who put everything into making their characters seem real and believable. Once they'd lost that, the show was over for me. Weird that kinda coincides with the beginning of the fifth season, huh?

Yeah, 24 wasn't/isn't all Jack to me either. But I meant as far as the writers were concerned, you can't have the show without him. Everyone else was just background. That's why I think they killed everyone. By season 4, it was clear people weren't tuning in for just Jack, like maybe in season 1 and 2. They had to bring in Tony, Michelle and Palmer. I mean come on, you're going to call an old president to come in during a time of national crisis to make your moves for you? They knew though, that people wanted them. Which is why I think for season 5 they said ok, we gotta cut these ties b/c they are starting to overshadow the main character.

And look what happened, season 6 was horrible and season 7 had to make up some outrageously full of holes plot to bring back one of the ones that ended up keeping people around.

I hated season 8 so I stopped about 12 episodes in, but I heard how they ended it and to me, I thought it was the cowards way out. He should have died. But, it's not a very popular opinion.
