If you have any ideas, comments, suggestions, please tell me.
I'd like to know any other ways as to spread the word.
Permanent, temporary, easy hard, I'll do my best to do it.
Thank you.
You Are Beautiful is a simple, powerful statement which is incorporated into the over absorption of mass media and lifestyles that are wrapped in consumer culture.
This statement and the context in which someone finds it gives meaning to its message and purpose to this project. The intention behind this project is to reach beyond ourselves as individuals to make a difference by creating moments of positive self realization in those who happen across the statement: You Are Beautiful.
Intention is the most important aspect of the You Are Beautiful project in its idea of purity. Graffiti and street art are an act not a style, but stylistically large corporations have been copying and using the 'urban decay' look to sell products.
It all comes down to intention. Nothing is sacred. Everything that has a perceived value becomes commodified. Companies hire out teenagers to slap up stickers and posters, and pay their fines when they are caught by the police. This is not street art, but a marketing campaign.
The reasons why street artists are doing what they are doing, in the way that they are doing, is not simply to question their surroundings; but to provide alternative perspectives, meanings, or values to those of consumerism.
Advertising elicits a response to buy, where this project elicits a response to do something. The attempt with You Are Beautiful is to create activism instead of consumerism.
You Are Beautiful uses the medium of advertising and commercialization to spread a positive message.
Projects like these make a difference in the world by catching us in the midst of daily life and creating moments of positive self realization.
Copied and pasted at
You Are Beautiful. There are more pictures (none are mine, however) also on that site. It's beautiful, to say the least.
Tennis balls - Tennis courts, not exactly permanent, or even temporary. Unless you have 40-50 extra tennis balls you want to give up.
Ground up chalk/charcoal and stencils - Medium used on
12/31/06. Works very well, washes out. Use a spray adhesive to cover the ground, place the stencil on top, and use a paint roller over the stencil with the ground up chalk. Can add charcoal to the chalk for a darker shade.
Lights - I'm not too sure how this one would work. Lots of lights would be needed. You can lay out the lights in a cursive manner and see how that goes.
Biodegradables
flowers - I've seen this one. You can find many flowers and lay them out on the grass.
dirt - Many people like drawing it in the dirt. It's temporary, people see it, and you can't get arrested for that.
sand - Same as above, more at the beach.
Big signs
cloth - I'm not sure which kind of cloth to use for signs like this, I've never done one. Maybe muslin could work, or canvas.
butcher paper - A less permanent solution. These signs could be posted anywhere, whether on a busy street on the wall, or an over pass on the freeway. Or even a school.
Crushed candy - Going with the stencils/adhesive thing. If you don't like the feeling of chalk, you can always use crushed candy canes for a more flaky kind of thing, or pixie stix. I don't know the prices for those, however.
Stickers - On the
YAB site, there's an address where you can send a SASE (self addressed stamped envelope) inside an envelope and in return, they will send you stickers that say 'you are beautiful'. You can spread them across town. They also have this thing called 'In your town' and if your town hasn't been admitted yet, you can take a picture of the sticker, wherever you put it, and send it to them. They may post it up.
You can also use any other stickers, mail labels work well. Or the 'Hi, my name is' tags too.
Again, if there are any ideas you'd like the share, feel free to leave them. I encourage you to share this message. People would like to hear that every so often. I love you all.
Thank you.
