Bad News:
So, remember that really awesome Semester at Sea thing from my last entry? Turns out, that may not be happening. I was indeed accepted, but apparently, acceptance doesn't actually mean there is room on the boat for you. So I'm currently on the waitlist (about #30) for an actual spot on the ship, and should find out in early November whether or not I'm going.
MAJOR BUMMER
At least, that is, until yesterday...
Good News:
When I found out about the waitlist thing, I was really, really bummed and determined NOT to be in New York in the spring. So, I looked at other opportunities, one of which was the Disney College Intern Program. Basically, you spend a semester working at Disney World and networking with execs. It's not academic at all, but looks great on a resume (you are, after all, working for Disney), and students from the program are often offered jobs after graduation. So, since it has always been a secret dream of mine (well, not SO secret...especially if you've ever been to Disney World with me) to work at Disney World, I applied. I figured that it was kinda a lost cause because, even if they accepted me, it would be as a janitor or something and I wouldn't want to go.
Well...
I had a phone interview on Monday, and overnighted my application on Wednesday (so that it would arrive Thursday at noon). Thursday at 4pm, I get a phone call from the program saying that I've been accepted to work in Operations!
What does that mean?
Operations are the people who run the attractions and greet people as they come into the park. And, even better, the woman said that, because I'm an Educational Theatre major, they would like to have me operating an "attraction with a spiel". Meaning I would get to be one of the live, costumed actors at a ride (think "Jungle Cruise") or a show (think "Terminator" at Universal, because I can't think of a Disney equivalent right now).
PRETTY DAMN AWESOME!!!
Plus, they obviously want me, because they accepted my application after having it for a mere 4 hours. Because I really am that awesome.
SPECIAL NOTE FOR THOSE OF YOU IN THE AREA (UF, UCF, ROLLINS, ETC...): If I do end up doing the Disney program, I get free admission to the parks for myself and my friends. Start planning your trips now!
