While I don't want to learn Russian (at least, for the moment) I am fascinated by Russian culture. As someone from the UK I see our culture being eroded away by things that come from America. I have absolutely nothing against American people but I certainly don't like the idea of every street in every town and city in the world having exactly the same shops and exactly the same things on sale. One great thing, for me, about travelling is to be able to notice the differences and find the things that make another country or city unique. The way things are going it will soon be impossible to tell where you are in the world because everywhere will look like everywhere else. I feel that my country should be looking to Europe for its cultural and creative ideas and not from America. We are very much a part of Europe after all. Because of Russia's status in the world both in the past and now, I feel we have a lot to learn from what Russia has to offer. I feel that our futures are entangled. What I wanted to ask you is how you see Russian culture now, and do you see the same things happening as I do here in the UK. (I am appalled when I see McDonalds, KFC, WalMart, Starbucks and others in every city I visit in the world.) Russia has given the world such incredible cultural leads in the past and I would love to see that happening again in the future. Does Russia have a culture now that the rest of the world should be taking notice of and learning from? :)))
What can Russia offer for other world? Oh, it is the real difficult question, but I try to explain my opinion, not authority’s opinion. Sure Russia can be proud of art, writers, ballet and the Great Patriotic war victory. And we try to promote these brands. But our main brands are vodka, laziness and bureaucracy. We need not promote these brands, everybody in the world knows about them. Although it, when we want to do something good we have to fight with Russian’s disadvantages. To win this war victory you have to be with firm belief in yourself and strength of mind. Russian heroes are extremely clever and strong. “Russian women go into burn izba (house) and stop galloping horse”. It is our proverb but it isn’t about women only, it is about hard working Russian people. Russia can offer genius for other world. Ordinary man becomes genius when he or she fights for his or her freedom in Russia.
Concerning McDonalds, KFC, and so forth, I answer shortly and simply. Unfortunately Russia hasn’t business culture due to it has a few good own business experiments. Our market is built by the world's giants who consider Russia as a cheap labor, plenty of low price raw materials, poor infrastructure and absence of competition.
I'm sorry it was such a difficult question, and I'm so pleased that you answered it very well. :))
I think you are right. People become stronger and more complete when they have to fight for the kind of freedoms that a lot of other people in the world take for granted. I really take your point about there being no competition (and all your other reasons) for these huge multi-national companies in countries like Russia, and that's why they are there.
I just feel that Russian people are great and that Russia should be taking a lead in the culture of Europe as a whole, rather than that lead coming from somewhere that is derived from Europe but which is not Europe.
Thanks so much for answering my question. I feel very proud that I have friends in Russia, and indeed all over the world, together we will work towards making the world a better place! :)))
