i was routinely skimming through the Globe website and the second headline read "Layton suggests talks with Taliban"
i think the headline spoke for itself, and the basic stance being that you can't accomplish peace without bringing everyone to the table.
i find that discussing afghanistan is never on my radar because of the exhaustive nature of debating such a topic (but doesn't diminish it's importance). instead, i noticed the 188 comments posted by Globe readers in reference to the article and decided to read some of them. it was filled with the usual 1-liners insulting Layton, accompanied by the shallow analysis of his contentious suggestion. i sometimes wonder what to think of these forums - because they're posting on the Globe website, are they avidly informed readers? or is it the same person making all these posts and using annonymous names because they hate mr.layton just that much? or somewhere in between? is mr.harper is taking us on the right track after all and this is merely a reflection of what canadians support?
blah, it's a little discomforting to see what Globe readers have to write sometimes, especially when they're bordering on pure racism and sheer ignorance. i guess i get tired of wondering about that, there doesn't seem to be any point. if anything, some of the comments give me a chuckle:
"5 & #11 thankyou for restoring my faith in the ability of some people to think and express themselves intelligently, as well as coming to suspect that maybe the editors at the Globe & Mail actually are capable of sorting through the general dross to post worthwile comments rather than pandering to those of a more inflammatory nature. For most of the rest, if Mr. Layton has done anything to cause me to doubt his intelligence, it is to make me wonder why anyone of his calibre should possibly want to aspire to lead a government over a country populated with such a mass of cretins. It truly frightens me that so many of you are permitted to vote and probably have a driver`s licence when, in reality, you shouldn`t be allowed out in public unescorted Cheers"
"Just once, I'd like to see the NDP get it right on an issue... Any issue really. "
"Mr.Layton, inspite of being a left-wing socialist, is absolutely correct. How in God's name can countries have peace if they do not get to know each other's concerns? This view point of just warring is counter-productive to long-term peace. Where in history has peace been attained by continuous fighting? There needs to be communication to achieve long term peace in this sorry world. Before you know it we all die, hence, we must make this life meaningful, don't forget we shall be judged by God one day. I agree with Mr. Layton, but I still think his wife is a commie! However, we spoke to the commies and achieved peace ,did we not!?...Peace to all the world! "
"The really scary part of this is that Mr. Layton and his wife are typical of the politicians whom Toronto elects to all levels of government."
"This is the leader of a political party in Canada ? - Maybe he should be deported to Iran - what an embarrassment.. "
" Talk to Taliban. These are guys whose system of justice is a bullet to the head to any woman suspected of adultery. Oh wait maybe it's any woman who doesn't wear a burka. "
" Let's take up a collection......we'll pass around the turban.......buy Olivia a burka and a couple of tickets for her and Jack on the next CAF Airbus. You go Jack! You de man with the Taliban! Say hi to Mullah Omar for us too. "
