So I thought I would be the parent who would go, "I'd never make her use an iPad! She'd be the little girl who plays with sticks!"
And then krude and I talked about it, and acknowledged that she will grow up in a world of touchscreens and gadgets. Especially with how into pop culture her parents are. Martea told me about the concept of modeling, which I'll talk more about in another post, but the gist of it is, I don't think we can keep her away from tech unless we hide under a rock as a family.
So she uses the iPad, and very well. She's 17 months and she can unlock it, choose the apps she wants (recently, Squiggles, Talking Tom), play music (recently: "We are Never Ever Getting Back Together", "Moves Like Jagger"), max the volume, and anything else she needs to do. What annoys her the most when using it? Youtube buffering. She can go into a tantrum, because she doesn't understand why the video suddenly stops. So I limited her exposure to it for the sake of her attention span.
But then we went on our road trip, and this is what saved us, really. She got to use the iPad the most in the car, and I think she began to look forward to car rides because of it.
Now that we're back to our normal routine, I'm limiting the iPad again, and I've hidden the Youtube app. She uses it for music and drawing, and I'm toying with the idea of getting her a cheapo Android tablet, something we won't panic over when she tosses it around.
Or maybe I should just let her play with sticks? Sigh!
