Anole had stowed away from the Xavier's Institute in Karma's trunk. He wanted to help find his missing teammate, Wither. But this was far from what he had been looking for. He had been walking down the street, asking people if they had seen Kevin. But when the power suddenly cut off in Mutant Town, that's when all hell broke loose.
In what seemed like an instant several army Jeeps roared through the streets of mutant town, filled with what looked like paramilitary enthusiasts. They were decked out in camo-gear (why camo would help them in the urban jungle was beyond Victor) machine guns and lots of explosives. One by one, the humans set ablaze mutant businesses and homes, chanting into the air, "SAPIENS FOREVER!"
Anole had never felt so racist in his life, but what he would give if he could just tear one of those racist pigs apart. His attention was suddenly drawn to the screams of a small boy who had been ripped from his home and dragged into the street. He was small and crying. His parents were being held back by more Sapiens as they begged for their son's life, "Please!! He isn't a mutant! Let him go! He has done nothing to you!"
The leader of the mob scoffed, "Don't try and hide it. We have pictures of your spawn before the glorious M-day." He turned his attention to the cowering boy. "Where are your scary forcefields now?" The man laughed at the boy's wimpering, "Well, shield this!" He said raising the butt of his gun.
Anole reacted out of instinct. He launched himself from his hiding place, camoflauged among the bricks of the alleyway and into the street, bounding from the pavement onto the wall behind the man. The young mutant let loose his long prehensile tongue and grabbed the gun away before any harm could be dealt.
The Sapiens turned in anger to see who would stand against them. The sight of a young green teenager with a super long tongue was hardly a welcome sight as they opened fire. Bullets pattered around him as Anole launched himelf through the air and into the fray. Training... remember your training Anole! he thought to himself.
Using his advanced acrobatic agility he flipped and bounded among the Sapiens. At close range they couldn't risk using their guns without fear of hitting each other. This was only so succesful before one of the men grabbed his ankle mid-leap and slammed him against the pavement. Dazed, Anole barely realized he was being dragged into the middle of the street. He was thankful that the Sapiens seemed to have forgot about the little boy, but he was in more danger than ever. A twisted ankle prevented him from escaping as the men and women struck him with their batons and rifles.
Please, don't let me die Anole prayed to anyone listening.
Karma quickly surveyed the area as the shockwave brought the electricity in Mutant Town down to a stuttering halt.
"Something's wrong." She said ominously to Chamber and Jubilee. Karma had enough field experience to know that this wasn't an ordinary power outage. This was widespread and externally caused.
"What's going on?" Jubilee asked, frightened now. She yearned for the safety of her powers and clung closely to Jono.
"Quiet. I'm goning to try something." Karma said. She closed her eyes and focused on expanding her mind. She always knew she had untapped psychic abilities, but she had no idea they were anything this advanced or powerful. She felt her mind touch the entire street... now the whole block... 5 blocks away. It was like listening to a police scannner, picking up residual thoughts from hundreds of signals. She suddenly felt danger.
An explosion ripped through the darkness. It was only a few blocks. Another one even closer. Karma, Jubilee, Penny, and Chamber ran towards the sounds of destruction. Turning a corner they gasped. Mutant Town may have lost power, but it was far from dark... it was on fire.
Karma could make out the images of several men and women whooping and cackling into the night as they lit maltov cocktails and hurled them into storefront windows. In the middle of the street a group of them seemed to be surrounding someone and cackling their obscene and chilling laughter.
"Who are these people?" Jubilee asked, astonishd as tears filled her eyes.
Karma grew angry, "The Sapiens League. The Sapiens are burning Mutant Town, and we're going to stop them."
As Karma began her charge she suddenly caught a psychic plea, that was more of a prayer than a conscious attempt at telepathy. More screaming thought than focused psychic communication. Please don't let me die the voice pleaded in her mind. The voice was familiar, she had heard it before... Anole?!
Jubilee was surprised by Karma's zeal and courage, she hadn't seen Karma take the lead in a charge in a long time. She followed suit. She may not have powers, but those weren't what made a hero. Plus, she always had a few tricks up her sleeves.
Sapiens this is you final warning, leave now or face the wrath of the X-men Karma telepatically broadcasted into everyone within 3 blocks of her.
The Sapiens charged weapons barred.
"So much for a dimplomatic aproach." Jubilee sighed as she dropped to the floor avoiding a baseball bat swung in a wide arc. Acting quickly she swooped her leg in a low kick knocking the assailant off of her feet. Jubilee grabbed the baseball bat from the now unconscious Sapiens Leaguer. At least now she had a weapon.
Karma had possessed two of the Sapiens and used them to battle the oncoming mob. It took a few moments before they realized what was going on and redirected their attack to her. Dropping her possession of the two Sapiens she refocused her psychic abilities, hoping to not cause too much damage with her new untrained talents. Karma's eyes gleamed red as she fired a wave of psychic pain at the five assailants before her. Instantly they were knocked off their feet, writhing in Karma's psychic induced pain.
She looked around to find that everyone was engulfed in a escalatingly dangerous conflict. Psychokinetic flames leaped about as Chamber joined the fray.
((OOC: Since LJ ate the comment, a reminder: This is taking place at the same time as all the chaos with Kenny, the YA, and the Runaways.))
Jono lept into the fray without giving it too much thought. He knew if he thought about it, things would get very, very bad. Not that they weren't already. But as long as he focused on the problem right in front of him, it was managible.
Like blasting these racist wankers. It was a simple thing to do. Just keep hitting until they stop moving. Get the civilians out of the way. Save the day.
Yeah, he could do that.
He could see Penny moving out of the corner of his eye, a deadly red blurr as she ripped through the attacking Sapien Leaguers. Bullets just slid off her like they were nothing. Minor annoyances to someone who's skin was as hard as diamond.
He saw the green boy go down beneath the humans' attacks, and he saw red.
OI! YOU WANKERS WANT A FIGHT, YOU GOT ONE! he roared in their minds, blasting into the crowed. He knew that some of them were now on fire, and that there was a good chance that some of the ones he had shoved away telekinetically might never get up again, but he didn't care. Not so tough when you ain't fightin' children, are ya!
Anole hurt. All over. The moment he went down, time seemed to slow down. It beating seemed to have no end. The young mutant cried as the strikes came more quickly and harder. He felt warm blood soak his shirt. He hadn't even realize he was bleeding.
Anole, I'm coming he heard a voice whisper in his mind.
A sudden whoosh of movement and his attackers had all but dissapeared. His vision fading he could barely make out the sight of a familiar face rushing to his side. It was Karma, his mentor back home at the Institute. He smiled weakly as she tried to stop the bleeding. Thank you he thought to her and everthing went dark.
Jono stood between Anole and the Sapien Leaguers, shoving them back, keeping a circle of flames between them. He glanced down at the boy. Bugger. Karma, Jubes, he's bleeding! Grab him and head for the Devi's Due!
That would be safe. Anyone stupid enough to actually attack the shop would be getting exactly what they deserved at the hands of the Wicked Witch of the East.
Not that Jono would have ever been dumb enough to call her that to her face.
*Thunk* Jubilee struck another Sapien Leaguer in the head with her bat. She was getting the hand of this whole hand-to-hand combat thing. Well... maybe more hand-to-metal baseball bat. Jubilee saw Karma scoop Anole up in her arms and make a dash for the Devil's due. The X-woman was strong, heaving the young mutant up in her arms and making good time towards the store. Several Sapien Leaguers tried to get in her way but she possessed anyone in her way and made them knock themselves out. Jubilee rushed in to cover her escape. Thwocking anyone that got in range.
In the corner of her eye she saw someone raise a gun toward her. In a split-second reaction she threw her baseball bat at the gunman. He fired as the bat struck him, knocking him over. The bullet flew and struck Jubilee in the shoulder. It only hit the muscle tissue and not the bone, but it knocked her off of her feet. She reeled in pain... trying to regain focus as she slumped towards the Devil's Due.
The unfortunate gunman never saw Penny come up behind him. And he didn't see anything at all when she was done with him.
Jono laid down his special version of covering fire as he followed the women to the Devil's Due, blasting away with almost reckless abandon at anyone stupid enough to try what the unfortunate Sapien Leaguer had tried before getting his due at the hands of the depowered Jubilee and the still powered Penance. Jubes? Talk to me, luv! Let me know you're still okay! He didn't try to disguise the worry in his 'voice' as Karma reached the door... and found it locked.
There was a man behind the counter of the shop, holding a shotgun, and pointing it right at her. Next to him was Eliza, who's face darkened as she saw who was rattling the door. She started to shake her head as the third person in the shop, with her magenta and black hair, pushed her way past and pulled the door open. "In! Quickly!" Cleo shouted.
Santo had been walking for about ten minutes when suddenly everything shut down. He was peering through the darkness trying to get his bearings when the riot broke out behind him near the Devil's Due.
"Oh, shit."
He turned around and started running back, his footsteps pounding heavily on the pavement.
Karma clambered inside with the bleeding Anole in her arms. "Thank you!" she said as Cloe led her into the kitchen and cleared off a large stainless steel table. She laid Anole down onto the table.
"My name is Karma... I don't know what happened. One moment everything was fine and then the next... these Sapien Leaguers appeared and attacked this student of mine. He's badly wounded... do you have any bandages we can use to bind his wounds?"
Cloe shooed her away, taking charge. Karma understood. "I'll be right back." She said Stay with me, Anole she projected into her student's unconscious mind.
She burst into the main room, drenched in blood. She saw Eliza's look of disdain. She understood Eliza's feelings, but was shocked the woman could still hold a grudge when someone was in such dire need. Jubilee sat in a booth, holding her shoulder which was bleeding. She had stopped the bleeding but was in a lot of pain.
Jubilee, are you alright? Karma asked telepathically.
Jubilee waved Karma's concern off, "Don't worry about me. It's only a flesh wound. We have bigger concerns." she said as she gazed out of the window. Chamber stumbled inside the diner along with Penance, chest ablaze. But the the Sapiens Leaguers outside were surprisingly calm and collected, despite the ass-whooping they were just handed.
"What are they so damn calm about?" Jubilee asked aloud. She choked back a gasp when she saw something in the distance... one of the jeeps that the Sapiens league had brought was outfitted with what looked like some kind of energy cannon. In the distance she saw several others moving into position, while others began pulling larger weapons from the back of a truck. "Where did the Sapiens League get firepower like this??"
Karma went white and closed her eyes, letting out a desperate call for aid, Any X-man in the area, this is Karma of the Institute. Mutant Town is under attack. Your aid is required immediately.
She hoped that someone would answer her call. It was doubtful her psychic plea would reach Weschester, but she knew there were some X-men in the area... X-factor, Wolverine... someone... help us. They were in over their heads.
As the madness reigned outside, a small black hole appeared at the "welcome" mat outside the Devil's Due. Nocturne and Magik hopped out of the stepping disc and tried to open the door, which she found locked. Cleo was hesitant to let these strangely dressed people in, but Jubilee confirmed their credentials.
"You rang?" Nocturne asked stepping into the diner.
"Nocturne? Magik?!" Jubilee's eyes widened at the sight of the familiar gleaming armor. But when she realized that Ilyana had not made some kind of miraculous return from the grave her memory kicked in, This is Amanda Sefton. Nightcrawler's old girlfriend. Didn't expect her. This is certainly an odd pair.
Magik looked around, realizing where she was. She had simply instructed the stepping disc to take her to the origin of the psychic plea. The Devil's Due... Rowena's place. She could barely stand the irony. She didn't like the idea of intruding onto Rowena's territory. She knew from experience how fickle and territorial the mage could be. She hoped that by protecting her store, Magik would be able to regain some of her respect.
"What's going on?" Nocturne asked, looking out through the windows.
"There's a shit load of firepower bearing down on us." Jubilee said, pointing to the row of energy cannons aimed at the diner. She could hear the humm of their generators charging the weapons. scattered in the street several Leaguers were armed with grenade launchers and aimed them for the diner.
"Let me." Magik offered, drawing the Soulsword.
"t h i c k e n" she said as she cast her familiar shielding charm. Immediately an invisible forcefield appeared around the store, although she knew that it probably wouldn't hold indefinitely, it would give them some time.
"What's the plan?" Nocturne asked. She flinched as a grenade launcher was fired into the field, bursting into flames and rumbling the ground with its concussive force.
"The plan is we don't die," Connor offered, keeping the shotgun trained on the outside. "Cleo, how's the kid?"
"Not good," the woman announced, applying a pressure bandage to Anole's wounds while Eliza handed her supplies and Penny hovered nearby, glancing constantly around the room.
"He's still... there." Eliza offered, making a vague gesture around the green mutant's head. "But what he really needs is a doctor. God, Cleo can barely manage first aid. Unless one of you happens to have some gift of healing people up?" There was just a hint of hope in her eyes.
Where in the hell is your gran? Chamber asked, still focusing on the telekinetic wall he'd thrown up. Yeah, the newcomer had tossed up a wall of her own, but it never hurt to have as much between them and the nutjobs outside as possible.
Eliza was very quiet for a moment. "She died. And she's very, very angry about it."
Magik's eyes widened, Rowena? Dead? This would have to be a conversation for a later time, there were more pressing matters at hand.
Karma, who had gone back to look after Anole called from the kitchen, "Anole's not going to make it here. We have to get him to a hospital. We can't give him what he needs here."
"How are we going to sneak him past that?" Jubilee asked pointing out towards the line of Sapiens Leaguers lobbing grenades and energy blasts at the shields.
"We won't have to. I can take him to a hospital." Magik said, "Will you all be alright without me?"
Nocturne took a look around. "I think we'll be able to handle things here. You make sure no one else dies tonight."
Magik released her concentration on the field before her. Knowing that it would stay up for a few minutes without her continued source of energy. She quickly walked back to the kitchen and scooped the bleeding mutant into her arms. He's so light she thought as she marched towards the door.
"o p e n." she commanded the door, which obeyed her magical command. Stepping into the street behind the shields, she opened a stepping disc. She turned to those in the diner, "Anyone else who wants to come," she said concentrating on Eliza, Cleo, Connor and Jubilee, "I'll leave the disc open a few moments after I jump in. I understand if you want to make a stand."
Magik nodded to Nocturne before leaping into the stepping disc.
Anyone who wants to leave, follow Magik, Jono said with some effort. Most of his concentration was being taken up by keeping up the wall outside. Otherwise, we stay put. We've got an easily defensible position, and there will be backup in the form of the Avengers or the Fantastic Four or some other bunch of wankers that runs around this city in their long underwear.
"I've got guns," Connor said. "And we can get up to the upper floors and shoot anyone who gets too close."
"Forth floor's got extra sheilds, and is designed to be blocked off from everything else in case of emergency," Eliza added. "With all the spells Grandma's got on this place, I don't think there's much that could be done to the building itself, except the first floor. And God help anyone who goes on the Second, cause nothing else will."
Johnny stared at the buildng for a minute. He looked over to Eddie who was doing the same thing. He paused and then grabbed the beetle from Eddie's hands.
"Recon time. We need to know what we are dealing with don't we? Then when we know what we are dealing with, you can give me some new toys and I can go in there."
A big smile came across his face, one of those' you know you can trust me' looks.
