In Hot Water (cue the cannons!)

"I'm not going to ask what you all were thinking, going after Hulkling."  Captain America said, doing his level best to keep his voice calm... and not doing a very good job of it.  "But I do want to know what was going through your minds when you broke him," he thrust an finger in Tommy's direction, "out of a federal institution."

Billy, Teddy, & the Kaplans teddyaltman February 15 2006, 02:26:32 UTC
"That should be fine, sir." Teddy said as he stood, palm flat between Billy's shoulder blades as he moved towards Jarvis and the door, pushing his boyfriend along in front of him with only the slightest bit of super-strength to help guide him along.

No, it wasn't okay. Nothing was okay. But the last thing they needed to do was antagonize one of the real Avengers, not when they were in this big of a mess. If Billy couldn't stay calm and in control, then Teddy would. Even if the last thing he wanted to do right now was deal with this.

Billy was tense all the way out the door... then his shoulders sagged and he let out a long breath. "Sorry," he murmured. "Oh god, I messed that up big time." He pulled off his head gear and ran a hand through his hair.

"Don't worry about it," Teddy muttured as they walked down the hallway behind the butler. There were far more important things to worry about and deal with than Billy losing it at Iron Man. He stopped abruptly, his hand falling away from the back of Billy's cape as he leaned against the wall in the hallway. "Can we -- can we wait a second?" He was going to lose it when he saw Mrs. Kaplan. He just knew it. She'd try to comfort him, she'd try to be Mom-like, and he would lose it.

"Sure. We can take as long as you like." Billy said. He reached out a hand towards Teddy, then hesitated. "I... God, everything I want to say sounds really stupid when I think about it, so I'll shut up now."

Teddy met Billy's hand halfway, pulling the other boy in close to him and holding on. He didn't care what the Avengers' butler might think if he saw them. It didn't matter. "Everything I think is really stupid when I think about it." It didn't comfort him the way it had when they'd rescued him, but holding onto Billy still helped. "I'm gonna lose it. God." He squeezed Billy's ribcage lightly and tried to find words as he pulled away again, pulling himself together again, a pathetic joke to bolster them both up. "If they brought your brothers and I lose it in front of them, you have to promise to zap them."

"Deal." Billy said. "I like you better anyway."

"I certainly hope so," Teddy said, and when the man guiding them carefully cleared his throat, he nodded and tried to put on a better face. He could at least try to look like he was in control for a little while before Billy's parents either smothered him in concern or decided that he was a far too dangerous influence for their son to be around. Not to mention the fact that their apartment was now ruined...

"Let's get this over with."

Billy put his headgear back on and straightened his shoulders, looking for a moment like he was prepairing to go into battle. And maybe he was. "Morituri Nolumus Mori." he said, giving just a hint of a smile.

A nerd to the very end.

He took Teddy's hand and walked the rest of the way down the hall."

Teddy let Billy walk just a bit ahead of him as Jarvis ld them to the waiting room. Too late, he considered the fact that he desperately needed new clothes beneath his borrowed blanket, and he'd only just opened his mouth before the door was opened and they were ushered in. Great. Now he wasn't going to get the chance to find out if Billy could do something about it, and he wasn't going to ask him to conjure any illusions with his parents watching.

"If you need anything, please use the phone on the sideboard," the butler said, and then he was gone, leaving them alone with Billy's parents. For a moment, Teddy thought he might've preferred to still be Kl'rt's captive.

"Um... Hi."

The tension in the room could have been carved up into blocks and used to build bridges. The elder Kaplans turned towards their son and his boyfriend, their faces drawn in lines of worry. Mrs. Kaplan closed the distance between them and drew Billy into a bone crushing hug before doing the same to Teddy.

"Are you two alright?" Mr. Kaplan said.

Teddy tried to pull a smile onto his face and then gave up on it, letting himself hold onto Rebecca Kaplan for longer than he really needed to. They weren't angry... yet. Maybe it'd come later. "I think we are. Pretty much." Billy'd been scraped up earlier, but it hadn't seemed too serious. Not any more serious than any other injury they'd gained as Young Avengers, anyway... He pulled away, looking at Billy's mom. "You didn't get hurt, did you, Mrs. Kaplan?"

"I'm fine. We're all fine." Mrs. Kaplan said finally pulling away. She put a hand on the side of Teddy's face. "We haven't lost anything that can't be replaced. Oh, Teddy, I'm so sorry. Is there anything we can do for you?"

"The twins are downstairs." Mr. Kaplan said. "We wanted to talk to you two alone. They're feeling rather rambunctius."

So the wonder twins would remain unzapped for yet another day... Teddy found himself smiling, even if it wasn't really that funny. "I'm really not sure there is anything you can do, Mrs. Kaplan." Billy'd said that his parents were taking care of his mom... well, probably as much as she could be taken care of until the fire department and police had inevitably arrived.

What would they do with a dead Skrull body that had his mother's-- No, he wasn't going to go there. Not now. Not yet. "We only just got back," he said, eyes downcast over Mrs. Kaplan's shoulder. "There's still things we have to talk about with the Avengers."

"It's the single most ungodly hour at night." Mrs. Kaplan said. "And even teenagers need sleep. Especially after the day you two have had. We're renting a couple of hotel rooms. You can stay with us while everything's worked out."

Something flashed across Mr. Kaplan's face for a moment. A look of almost-arguement. But not something he was going to voice here, obviously.

"That's..." Teddy couldn't say he was completely surprised by the offer, and what he wouldn't give to be able to stay with Billy, have him near while he tried to figure things out (how he felt about his mom; how Kl'rt's words changed so many things; how unsure he was about who and what he was, let alone what he was going to do now), but-- "It's really good of you to offer, Mrs. Kaplan, but I don't think I should do that." He looked towards the other teenager, who'd been so quiet during this exchange, hoping for back-up. "Billy?"

"If you're staying here, then I'm staying too." Billy said. "... if you want me to," he added. "It's too dangerous, and if I have to spend the night with Thing 1 and Thing 2 alone..." he shuddered.
