Giving the Devil His Due (tag Hawkeye

Mar 08, 2006 14:03

The Devil's Due took up the first floor of an older building just on the edge of Mutant Town. The building had been there since the early 1920s, and the ice cream parlor had been there since 1973. The 12 floors above the ice cream parlor were apartments that nobody officially rented ( Read more... )

So, can anyone actually tell me what the bloody hell we just went through in a way that will make this all make sense? Jonothan asked, one hand resting lightly on Penny's shoulder. On a more private mental band, he asked Sophia You alright, ducks?

The British mutant had settled himself and Penance near the juke box, and Penny was currently inspecting the relic from a reletively safe distance.

Sofia was just as lost as Jono. Everything was happening so fast that she barely had time to react to it all. Unlike the others, she hadn't gotten sick from the teleportation, though she did begin to feel a headache coming on. She wrapped the blanket around her shoulders, standing a little ways from Penny and Jono as she watched the scene unfold in front of her.

When she heard Jono's voice in her mind, she turned her head to him and nodded. How long had it been since a telepath spoke to her mentally? The last one to do so was Ms. Frost, back when the Institute was in chaos over M-day...

"I'm fine. Just overwhelmed, I guess."

Overwhelmed and upset that she could do nothing to help. Unfortunatly, this was not a foreign feeling to her.

Jonothan grabbed one of the blankets and carefully tucked it around Sofia's shoulders. Day in the life. he said. Day in the bleedin' life. Bet you thought you were done with all this nonsense the day you left the Institute, eh? God knows I did.

He looked around the room, cocking his head to one side, clearly waiting for an answer to his first question.

As idealistic as she was, Sofia knew being a mutant and former Xavier's attendant meant a normal life was impossible.

"Deep down, I suppose I did. But things were better before I had to leave."

Not to say things weren't good now, but being with there were many people she missed from her days there. Like Dani, David, Jay... Julian. She moved her eyes to look down at the floor, tracing her foot along the lines of the tiles. If only she could have everything back, before M-Day took it from her.

Jono patted her shoulder gently, keeping his next words strictly between himself and the girl. Funny thing about the Institute. Seems like no matter how bad you bollocks it up, you can always go back.

Rowena cleared her throat softly. "Since nobody else seems inclined to speak up..." she said, "I'll tell what I know. Anyone who can fill in the gaps, feel free."

She looked around the room and smiled grimly. "Dr. Vanessa Sinesis is up to her old tricks of trying to make super soldiers from readily avaible material. She's been doing this since before I was born, and I've been fighting her for most of my life. It's a long, very interesting story for another time. Today, she decided to kidnap a bunch of superpowered children from here-"

And all over Mutant Town. Jono added as Penny touched the juke box, and it came to life. It started playing CCR's Bad Moon Rising at a volume that caused Billy to groan. Penny touched the juke box again, and it went off. Me and Penny live a few blocks away from here, and a lot of folks were ( ... )

"Why did she want us?" Cassie asked. "She could turn anyone into super soldiers. Wouldn't she get too much attention kidnapping a bunch of teenagers? What did she even do to get us all?" She blushed. "I fell asleep and then when I woke up there wasn't time to ask."

"Because she wanted to see if she could get away with it." Eliza said darkly, running her nails up and down the inside of her bare arm, over the pale scars. "She did it because she knew it would hurt Grandmother to have people taken right from the shop. She did it because she didn't want to waste time on building up from scratch. Why bother when there's a huge storehouse of potential super soliders right there in New York." She gestured emphatically, pointing at Teddy.

"And you. Stop with the guilt feelings. She would have cheerfully sliced you and your boyfriend up just to see how you both tick, and that wouldn't even be the worst that she's done." She ran a hand over her bare arm, fingers tracing the network of scars there. "It's her goddamn fault I can't sheild in the first place. She's a monster, and I get to live with the results every day. She knew who I am, she knew I can't sheild, and she knew what leaving me unsheilded would do, and she did it to me anyway. Because she could." She was scratching harder now, raising red marks ( ... )

Clint Barton had settled into the room watching everyone help out. He was curious as to what these kids had just gone through but didnt want to risk getting yelled at again. He pulled up a chair and sat down.

"So what exactly happened to you guys?"

He asked breaking his silence.

Sofia shifted her feet, looking away from the others and down at the tiles. She hated how depressing she was being and her confusion and mixed feelings about what Jono had just said to her made it worse. She was about to open her mouth to add that she had been taken from Salem Center and others probably were as well, until Rowena continued explaining. It didn't matter, she guessed, since the old woman probably knew her arch nemesis would be attracted to the mutants residing at Xavier's ( ... )

Teddy had decided, at this point, that it was better to just listen to the tale being told from a different viewpoint than to try to answer any questions. Better to just hold Billy while the doctor was looking over Patriot and the others, better to just hold his tongue about her words, even if he could feel the anger roiling just beneath the surface.

What the hell did that girl know? He narrowed his eyes, kept them pointed away from Eliza and the others who were speaking; she didn't understand, and he didn't care to argue with her to try to make her understand.

"So are we going to call the Avengers or not?" he asked the others in the main dining area, voice flat.

Rowena swore, quietly and creatively, for several moments before Abraham covered his mouth with his hand. Eliza had curled up back in her booth and seemed to be glaring at nothing at all, and Billy had his eyes closed again.

It was Eli who finally, reluctantly said, "Yeah. We should."

"At last, someone with a shred of sense." Agamemnon's voice was caustic as he straightened up from his position where he had been examining Patriot's now-healed wound.

"Contrary to what my family wishes to believe, I can't make you all good as new. There's tests and other work which require equipment I don't have here. Most of you should be fine, but your young..." He looked at Kate, and Eli merely coughed.

"Your young lady," Auggie decided, "needs testing to ensure that she has no internal trauma. All of you need a change in clothing adn other things which cannot be supplied here, and you, Mother, need to shut up, because magic is not helping you right now and you can't fool me as to what you need done ( ... )

Billy opened an eye and put on a rather sickly smile. "Hi, Auggie." he said. "How're Jake and Matt? They're still going to Yale, right?"

Teddy wasn't the only one who could avoid an issue. He was just considerably better at it than Billy was.

"You know, I'm sure Eliza could do with some sage fatherly advice about now."

"Eliza can do without it, thank you very much William." Eliza snapped from her booth.

"Jake's on exchange in Barcelona," Auggie said briefly, ignoring his daughter's outburst. How his best friend's son had managed to get this far off-track...

"I'm sure you already know what I think of what you're doing." No way he couldn't; he'd been witness to several debates, including the big ones which had led to the move in the end. Family had only been one reason that Agamemnon had left New York. "Does your family know about this?"

"Of course. I'm surprised Mom hasn't called you to brag." Billy said, actually managing to sound slightly afronted. Like he wouldn't tell his parents?

Okay, admittedly, he had been stalling, and when he'd tried to tell them in the first place he had inadvertantly come out to them, but he had told them eventually. When the Super-Skrull had attacked their apartment.

Something in Auggie's expression told him that he was probably going to be in very big trouble for a very long time for this. Even if it wasn't his fault.

'And who's idea was it to get everyone out of the Tower?' a nasty little voice in his head asked in a smug whisper.

"I'm sure I'll have to ask her why she hasn't, after I make sure you get home safely." Of course Agamemnon was going to be the responsible adult, and make sure his friend's child made it home. Then he was going to have a talk with Jeff about the duties of parenthood and how important it was to keep an eye on your sons so that they didn't place themselves in the path of incredible harm.

"Going to be hard, sir," Teddy said, leaning his head back against the seat cushion and closing his eyes. "Billy's apartment... sortof got blown up yesterday." God, had it only been yesterday?
