Ice Cream Cures All Ills

It was Billy's idea that they should meet up somewhere outside the Avengers Tower to talk. Some place where they wouldn't have God only knew who listening in on their conversations. Some place where they could relax ( Read more... )

"And hopefully not piss them off enough in the process that they leave us hanging out to dry," Teddy inserted, wry tone echoing his smile. "Assuming they haven't sent a spy after us or bugged us." He didn't like not having Eli with them to discuss this, but it couldn’t be helped. Grandma guilt and his job at the library were things that had to be taken into account.

"I'm not sure we have that many options for what we can do without the Avengers, anyway," he said, reaching across Billy to pull several packets of sugar from the small ceramic holder. Tearing one open, he poured the contents onto his tongue -- don't give me that look, Billy -- then made a brief grimace before swallowing and continuing.

"Between Kl'rt and the Kree after me, and the government," he flipped the second, unopened packet of sugar across the table at Tommy, "after him -- you really think we're ready to take anyone on after yesterday?"

Tommy had to agree with Teddy, he was all for not pissing off the Avengers. Much. Unless it was unavoidable in which case he’d get over it pretty quickly.

Billy had asked a valid question, what did they want to do. Hell, what did he want to do? Other than the general urge to be elsewhere and not get hauled back in he hadn’t put much thought into that whole ‘what next’ line of thought. Well…he really didn’t want to get his butt kicked or shot at by the Skree.

“Like it’s my fault they want me. I can’t help how desirable I am. People flock.” Tommy said as he caught the sugar packet. He stared at it for a moment before making a face and tossing it back. “So, if we’re all in agreement about not wanting anyone to go vanishing in a black helicopter or space ship, I’m guessing figuring out how not to get trashed is our first priority. ”

Cassie held her hand to her mouth to cover her audible giggle at the "desirable" comment Tommy made. She coughed, and tried to stifle her smile.

"I don't know what we can do without relying on the Avengers. At least for a while. Even they don't know what's going on with the Kree and the Skrull, though that's not really that odd considering those two races." She glanced at Teddy. She hoped he didn't take that the wrong way. "And their war." Cassie added just in case. "Uhm... why do you think they want you Teddy?"

(God damn it brain, start functioning when it comes to alien races. *blames mono*)

Kate rolled her eyes at the way Cassie was innocently feeding Tommy's ego. It wasn't like he needed it, obviously.

"Maybe they have a space princess in dire need of rescuing? Although if that were really the case we'd have to let them know they missed a few memos." Kate pulled a tube of lipstick out of her purse, took a napkin out of the dispenser, and wrote "taken" on it in the dark purpley color she wore only for superheroing. Satisfied with her work, she unfolded the napkin, leaned over the table, and tucked it into Teddy's shirt collar like a bib.

"How do you feel about dying your hair?" she asked next, looking back at Tommy. "Practically speaking it's a quick and effective disguise, especially considering your current color. Maybe a shade of red, since if you go too dark your sparkling personality will be the only way we could tell you and Billy apart without, er..." Kate looked around the store, then decided to play it safe anyway and wiggled her fingers in a way that was supposed to indicate powers, "you know."

"[Do princesses still need rescuing these days?]" the Vision asked lightly. "[Perhaps I've been spending to much time around female superheroes; I'm having difficulties imagining a situation where that would be necessary.]"

"[Cassie is correct, however. The Avengers have been working on this sort of thing for much longer than we have, and it would be foolish to ignore that. I do agree with Billy as well - we can't let them command us. Otherwise, there's no real point in being the "Young" Avengers - we'd just be a sub-team.]"

The Vision had reabsorbed his embarrassing coat when he was sure that no one around was looking at them. He also managed a small digital camera to take a picture of Teddy with his "taken" lable. He'd figure out how to hook himself up to a printer once they got back to the Tower.

His prediction of becoming the entertainment had been accurate; Teddy's smile twisted to the side and faded as he pulled the napkin free, laying it down flat on the table.

"I think I should tell you guys everything before we try to work on a plan," he said, and here his voice became more restrained as he glanced around. If it weren't for the visual give-aways of Billy's power, he'd have asked the spellcaster to see if he could somehow summon silence; as it was, this was the best they could hope for. "This is a lot bigger than anything we've had to deal with since Kang the Conquerer. You should know what you're getting into."

It didn't quite feel right to Teddy, using 'you' instead of 'we' -- but hours of insomnia and pain and thinking had taken their own toll, and some of the things Kl'rt had said to him made too much sense. If they were true, then maybe the others shouldn't get involved if there was any way to avoid it. But whether they were or they weren't true ... he needed more than just Billy at his side. All five of them -- ( ... )

Tommy, who had zoned out of the conversation at the mention of dying his hair, which was all kinds of blasphemy on Kate’s part not to mention not happening, blinked as Teddy looked at him, clearly waiting for a response of some sort. Tommy blinked, mind racing back a few seconds. Yeah, he paid attention really well.

Once he’d caught up his first reaction was to smirk and say ‘of course not’, but Teddy looked serious and he was supposed to be playing nice. Even his love of drama and making everyone around him miserable didn’t allow for doing things that could come back and bite him in the ass. His sense of self-preservation was a bit too well honed for things like that.

He leaned back some and nodded slowly. “If you can all be quiet about me, I can be quiet about you. It‘s only fair after all.”

Rowena let the kitchen door bang loudly behind her, and was slightly gratified when she saw Billy jump a bit and turn in his seat. She held up a very large, heavey tray of food and nodded before coming over. "Order's up," she announced, balancing the tray on one hand as she unloaded with the other.

She absolutely hated interrupting the children (things were just getting interesting!), but if she didn't get the food out soon, it would melt or get cold.

With all due speed, she laid out ice cream and water and fried food and chili and bloody sandwhiches, ending with two large glasses of milk that came complementary with the Still Warm Flesh of the Living. "Enjoy." she said sweetly, then quickly retreated.

The Vision waited until the door closed behind Mrs. Xanathos before leaning forward.

"[I can guarantee that you have my support in this, Teddy.]" he said quietly. "[But I'd prefer not to go into anything uninformed. Tell us what you can.]"

The Vision would be lying if he didn't say he was nervous, though. Why had Teddy kept this information from the Avengers? Clearly it was something important or else he wouldn't be so worried over it.

Surely Teddy had his reasons. And the Vision couldn't help him if he didn't know what was going on.

Kate licked at her technicolor sherbet, preemptively tending to a few spots that looked like they'd start dripping soon. She remembered how things had gone with Kang, and if the current situation--only Teddy's half of it, even--was as big as that, they were going to need her as much as anyone else on the team.

Especially if the others managed to get themselves locked up again. That had been pretty stupid.

"Whatever the deal is, I'm in, too," she added after the Vision had spoken. "Backing off just because things are getting rough isn't my style and you know it, so frankly I find the implication otherwise a bit insulting." Kate smiled, though, and went back to her rainbow sherbet.

"You know where I stand." Billy said, poking his sandwich with a finger. He half expected it to start mooing. Exactly the way he liked it. He was halfway through biting into it when he heard Zack call out to him.

With a small groan, he raised a hand and waved a bit, mouthing to the mutant that they could talk later, but not now. He liked Zack in a vague kind of way, but now was an incredibly bad time. He almost cursed when he saw a girl he didn't know sit down at the table nearest theirs. This place usually wasn't so full this time of day. That was why he'd suggested coming early.

Cassie had devoured almost half of her chocolate. As unsettled as she was that Teddy hadn't told the Avengers, she hadn't had anything to eat since that morning, and even only a few spoonfuls of cereal before her mother called and they got into another fight. She swallowed a mouthful of brownie-chocolate goodness before speaking.

"What is it?" Cassie asked, careful to keep her voice down. "Why didn't you tell the Avengers- they are helping us, and if it's big then why wouldn't you?" Granted, Teddy didn't know them like she did.
