So, the good news is that I get to work the Reference Desk at the law library today, Monday, and Tuesday while the reference staff is at a conference. The bad news is that it's the middle of summer, and REALLY, REALLY slow at the desk. So, I decided that I'd post some random stuff I haven't had time to post lately.
Finished with another class
I turned in my final Wednesday for my Library Information Systems class, which was a class about the technological aspects of a library (the systems used to create the Online Public Access Catalog you search through the computer and the attached circulation system). I liked the class and the material, but I felt that it was a bit too rushed (which is not surprising for a 4-week course). I wrote a ton for the final exam, and it felt like I could have wrote more, but I don't know if that's law school still talking or what.
I still have another class left, but it's done next week. I've got a bibliography and a national profile to finish, plus some more of the busywork. (Law school may have sucked, but there was a whole lot less busywork.) Then I basically get my month off school before it's back to the grindstone the last week of August for my (really) final year of school.
Dan Patrick leaving ESPN Radio. Price is Right next?
I know that some of you don't care, but Dan Patrick
announced this week that he's leaving ESPN, saying he wants to pursue other interests. I've not always agreed with Dan Patrick (in fact, I think that he sometimes sees fire where there is merely fog), but he's always been one of my favorite radio guys. It also means that his show will become someone else's (I'm pulling for Doug Gottlieb, but Doug's on in prime time), which also probably means that the "The Big Show" segments with liberal TV personality Keith Olbermann (who was Dan's tag-team partner on SportsCenter in the 1990s) will be a thing of the past, and that's a real tragedy, too.
Of course, Colin Cowherd (who's on ESPN Radio right before Dan Patrick) suggested this week that Dan may be the replacement for Bob Barker on The Price Is Right, which would certainly be a curious fit. Then again, Colin is known for blowing smoke and crashing blogs, so this may have just been a pile of crap.
"Live Free or Die Hard" and "Transformers" Mini-Reviews
Well, two of the bigger movies of the summer came out the last week, and yours truly was there to catch all the action.
artz_chick and I caught Live Free or Die Hard on opening night. 8-word review: Action. Boom! "I'm a Mac" Guy. Boom! Yippekayay! Boom! B+. It was the best Die Hard since Die Hard. Then, the following Monday, I caught a midnight showing of Transformers with the Rathful One. I was not expecting much, since Michael Bay gives me nightmares about Japanese bombers dropping bad movies on Hawaii, so I ended up pleasantly surprised. 8-word review: Robots! Decent story. Suspense. Pointless humans. Transformer characterization? B. Could have been better with more about Optimus and the Autobots, and less about the soldiers from Qatar. Shia LeBouf was good as Spike, I mean Sam.
E3 Going on Now
The biggest week in video gaming is happening as I speak. IGN.com and 1up.com both have coverage, as does G4tv. Biggest news thus far: New Katamari game is apparently a 360 exclusive. Mass Effect has been delayed again to November (when I preordered, it was scheduled for April 22). Rock Band, the successor to Guitar Hero, looks good. Nothing unexpected, though. (But I'm still hoping Obsidian throws up a KOTOR3 trailer as they leave the expo.)
Well, that's all I've got energy for. I'll catch y'all later.
