"Happy birthday!”
“Happy birthday, you sexy ass nigga!"
“No wait, we were supposed to just say ‘Happy Birthday’, Val!” The blonde girl with blue eyes said, looking with an amused frown plastered on her face at the rather short girl with green sparkling eyes and light-brown hair as Chloe opened the door, still clad in her cow printed footed pajamas.
"Whoa, what's with all the noise?" She asked, rubbing the sleep out of her green eyes. It had literally been thirty seconds since she had woken up, and she sure as hell didn't need the obnoxious noises this early in the morning.
"We wanted to be the first ones to see you, because we’re the most important bitches in your life, duh," the lighter-haired girl chirped, and she and her friend walked inside the house and the light-brown haired girl went with a bee's trail straight to the sofa chair, something she always did when she was coming over at Chloe's.
The first time she had come over she had discovered this piece of furniture and it hadn't taken long before she had claimed it as her own, so now every time she'd be there none of Chloe's friends (included Chloe herself) dared to put up a fight with her about sitting there, they knew they'd lose anyway.
The girl let out some strange noise, making herself comfortable in the process by turning herself ninety degrees so she could throw her legs over the armrest and sliding a bit down. That marking smug grin was plastered on her face as she eyed her friend with her green eyes.
''Girl, you totally hoped we were the boyfriend!'' The ''tough'' Afro-American accent the dark-haired girl put on was easily said terrifying and amusing at the same time. It made her sound ridiculous.
Both Chloe and Ashlee snorted, quickly escalating, in no time, into stomach aching laughter. ''Val, please! Don't ever do that again! Oh my God!'' A snort and hiccup simultaneously rolled out of the birthday girl’s mouth, which made Chloe laugh even more and Valentina just sat there, laughing awkwardly, with a raised eyebrow as she watched the scene unfolding in front of her. She couldn't quite comprehend why her friend was laughing so hard. Or she could, actually; It was obviously because she's so hilarious. That must be it.
It was the day before Chloe's 17th birthday and it was a rather beautiful day of spring. The sun was shining through the few clouds that were splayed across the bright blue sky, a gentle breeze lingered around the crowded streets with people riding on their bikes, walking with their dogs, jogging in the Gwynns Falls/Leakin park, walking around the markets and basically just enjoying the warmth of the morning sun on the backs of their heads.
To Chloe, it was a pretty exciting day. First of all, all of her friends were coming over for her pre-birthday party. She had decided to keep it on a low profile, not really wanting to get her house trashed by a hundred of hammered high school students. She invited five of her bestest friends (Anya, Claudia, Bridjet, Valentina and Ashlee, but the last two were already claiming Chloe's sofas and plundering her fridge)
Let alone the fact that this was the first birthday she’d spend with her boyfriend of a couple months, and that thought was what made her the most happy.
“So, when are the rest of the girls coming, and are they gonna bring more food?” Valentina asked, throwing an empty bag of Doritos at Ash’s head, making the blonde girl glare and stick her tongue out at her.
“Hmm, I’m not sure,” Chlo answered as she brushed her hair, looking at the two girls through the living room mirror with amusement. ''They should come around the time I invited them, instead of four hours earlier... unlike you two.'' She added with an accusing tone in her voice, making the two teenagers giggle.

Four hours filled with Valentina and Ashlee making fun of Chloe as she curled her hair and eating almost all the food that there was left in the house (Chloe even had to kick their ass as they tried to eat the birthday cake), quickly flew by, and sooner than later, the three girls found themselves sat among their best friends, cracking dumb jokes, listening to the music that had brought them together in the first place and putting a bright smile on the pre-birthday girl’s face.
Even though everything felt incomplete without him, Chloe still managed to smile. She did feel (in a metaphoric way) her phone burn inside the pocket of her jeans, even though she tried not to pay attention at the way it hadn’t buzzed in the whole day. She mentally frowned upon the fact that her boyfriend hadn't shown up yet (he was already almost an hour and a half too late)
''We should sing happy birthday!'' Claudia exclaimed, practically jumping off the sofa and bouncing up and down as her excitement got the best of her. Chloe bit her lip and frowned slightly, it felt always so awkward to her when people would sing for her.
“Oh my God, yes!” Anya chirped, wrapping her arms around Claudia as she jumped up, just because she could and walking over to the kitchen, Ashlee following her suit so that they’d get the cake and the candles ready.
“Wait, isn’t your actual birthday tomorrow, Chlo?” Bridjet asked from where she was sitting next to Valentina, sipping on her coke.
“Yeah, but I wanted to spend the last hours of my sixteen with you guys,” Chloe smiled, popping a crisp in her mouth.
“Aw, that’s so gay!” Val exclaimed, awwing at her friend and making her giggle.
“Haaaaaapy birthday to yooou,” the girls heard Anya and Ash sing as they approached the girls from the kitchen, holding in their hands a rather impressive rainbow-cake (for being only for 6 people), with flowers adorning the sides or the round cake and... oh well. And a penis drawn in the center with black frosting. Chloe couldn’t contain the horselaugh that came out of her mouth, making her friends grin triumphantly. She should’ve expected this, really,
“Happy birthday tooo yooooou,” the rest of the girls joined, making the dark-haired girl bite her lip to stifle the goofy slime that threatened to spread across her lips. “Happy biiiirthday, dear Chlo-hoeeee, happy birthday, toooo, yooooooou,” they sang at an offbeat tone, cheering when Chloe blew out the seventeen candles that surrounded the penis with a small painting her face.

“So hey, how come the boyfriend didn’t show his ugly face?” Val asked a few hours later, while she and Ash helped Chloe clean up the mess the six best friends had made.
Chloe turned around and stared at the brunette, aimlessly waving a paper plate in her hand.
This, this was why she didn’t want the girls to stay and help her clean.
“Eh, I don’t know,” she sighed, shrugging. “Maybe he had something else to do or something... whatever,” she trailed off, turning around and talking over to the kitchen to dump the dirty plates in the garbage, thankful for the fact that her friend hadn’t insisted on it.
It was an understatement to say that Chloe was really pissed and hurt at her boyfriend, but she refused to let that ruin the amazing day she had had with her girls.
Once the three teenagers had somehow put everything back in its place, Ashlee and Valentina hugged her friend goodbye and without much fuss they left, finally leaving Chloe all to herself. She sighed and plopped down on the couch, covering her eyes with the back of her hand and letting out a deep breath.
She loved her friends to death, but they could get a little exhausting at times. She had a fun day, got really nice presents, but all she wanted at the moment was her boyfriend, although at the same time, she didn't want to see him. At all. He had pissed her off thoroughly by not calling or texting her and he had to have a pretty damn good reason to not have her ignore him.
In the meantime the evening had fallen and Chloe found herself sitting on her bed reading The Hunger-games whilst You Me At Six played softly in the background. She couldn't bring up the concentration to actually register the words that were in the book and with a sigh rolling over her lips, she put it aside, burying her face in her pillow.
The dark-haired girl suddenly heard a loud yelp and the sound of a tree-branch breaking, the thud of something heavy hitting the ground afterwards, and she immediately jumped off her bed and ran to the window, opening it only to find her features were involuntarily twisting into a scowl.
“What are you doing here, Jack?” She asked coldly, frowning at her boyfriend. Jack sat there, with one leg over the small balcony and the other one still hanging around as he tried to hop over the little fence (something he failed miserably at), face flushed pink and shiny with sweat and jeans stained with dirt.
''I- eh...'' He stuttered, caught off guard with the tone of the girl. “I came to uh... see you. Happy birthday?” He mumbled, looking at his girlfriend and swallowing a lump in his throat away. As how things in the situation looked now, he was pretty much fucked.
“Yeah, okay, nice seeing you, bye,” she said, turning around and closing the double doors of her balcony, climbing into her bed and hiding her body underneath the white duvet, hoping to whomever was out there that Jack would just leave her alone.
That whomever didn't seem to really like her, though, because Jack sat down on the balcony in front of the double doors and ran a hand through his hair, sighing.
“I’m sorry I didn’t come earlier today, Chlo...” He said, making sure he spoke loud enough for him to be heard through the glass doors, biting his lip. “I... would you please let me in? It’s really cold out here and I brought you triple chocolate cupcake,” he tried, taking the sweet treat out of his backpack and grinning when he saw the lump hidden under the bed covers that was his girlfriend climb out of the bed and walk over to the balcony, letting the skunk-haired boy slip through the doors with a sheepish smile on his face... not before she snatched the cupcake out of Jack’s hand.
''I'm really angry with you, Barakat,'' Chloe mumbled, taking a bite of the chocolate cupcake as she walked back to her bed, climbing on it. ''You have some hardcore explaining to do, just so you know.” She squinted her eyes and scooted away from Jack when she felt her bed dip in from the extra weight that the boy brought by sitting down.
Jack scooted closer and placed his hand on Chloe's thigh, feeling a slight pang at his heart when the girl rolled on the mattress away from his hand, he frowned again and grabbed his bag, taking out a stuffed Pusheen doll he knew Chloe loved so much and had been drooling over for the last couple of weeks. He placed the toy in front of her and saw how Chloe slowly and subtle reached her arms out and quickly grabbed the Pusheen, cradling it in her arms and almost making love with it.
''Maybe I'm not that angry,'' Chloe mumbled under her breath and she stroked the stuffed toy's head carefully, as if it was made of porcelain and breakable. It was something that made Jack curl his lips in an adored smile. His girlfriend was just too cute, okay? ''But you still need to do some hardcore explaining to do,'' the dark-haired girl continued, not snuggling into his side and letting him touch her (like Jack hoped Chloe would've done) but the Lebanese boy still did make some progress; Chloe was looking intently at him from underneath her eyelashes. Jack felt like she was forcing him to explain everything with just her eyes.
''You probably want to know why I didn't show up, huh?'' Jack mumbled, nervously playing with the sleeves of his pullover, pulling them over his hands. and twisting and turning the ends.
''No shit, Captain Obvious.''
Jack chuckled and let his eyes fall onto the digital alarm-clock that was set on Chloe's bedside table and he saw that it was 11:38 PM. Okay, okay, he had twenty-two minutes to make this whole situation work out as he had planned in his head. That should be doable, right?
''Well... It’s like…’’ Jack said, trailing off with his sentence into silence. Before he left his house, he had thought his whole explanation out in the most perfect way possible, because he really wasn’t as much of a dickhead as he seemed to be at the moment. He really had a ‘’good excuse’’ to why he didn’t show up.
‘’You had invited me and your friends to celebrate your pre-birthday today’’ (Chloe rolled her eyes under those words, because of course she knew that, she was there herself) ‘’But today also marks the day of five months of dating.’’ (Yes, Chloe also knew that. What did that matter?) ‘’And…’’ The black haired boy said, shrugging his shoulder and pushing himself in a kneeled-position in front of Chloe.
‘’I wanted to celebrate this day with you and only you. Not your friends. It’s not like that I don’t like them, because I do, they’re funny, but I felt like this had to be… our special moment. I planned to be here with you as soon as it was midnight, so I could be the first one to kiss you and celebrate you on your real 17th birthday’’ he admitted with his lips curled in a small smile and he grabbed his bag again, digging his hand in it again. ‘’I admit it was a dick-thing to do to not text or call you, but I wanted to surprise you… Guess that didn’t work out as well as I had planned in my head. I didn’t mean to hurt you, baby. I would never hurt you on purpose, I hope you know that.’’ Jack took out another sweet treat, only this one was more cake-like and had candy letter words and candles on them. ‘’I’m sorry, I didn’t have any ‘a’s left. Happy birthday, darling.’’
Chloe had felt her heart swell under Jack’s words and her anger fading away. A smile appeared on her face as she grabbed the cake Jack was holding out. A couple of colourful candles adorned the cake and the words; ‘Hoppy Borthdoy, Clhoe.’’ It was something she couldn’t bite back a chuckle at.
‘’Who’s Clhoe, Jack?’’ Chloe pointed out, sending a playful glare at her boyfriend. ‘’Are you secretly cheating on me?’’
‘’No!’’ Jack exclaimed and his eyes widened. He launched his hands forward to the cake and tried to rearrange the scrambled letters, muttering apologies. Chloe rolled her eyes and slapped Jack’s hands away. ‘’I don’t care anymore, I forgive you and I think it’s really sweet.’’ Her eyes lit up and she pulled Jack closer, pressing their lips together. ‘’Thank you, babe,’’ she muttered under her breath, kissing him over and over and over.
They laid there (snuggled up and kissing each other) until the clock indicated that it was midnight, Jack pulled back, the characteristic goofy grin plastered on his face. ‘’Blow the candles out!’’ he exclaimed, pushing himself up and clapping in his hands. Well, Chloe did want to blow the candles out… But Jack first had to light them. Which was something he did.
‘’You have to do a wish!’’ And Chloe knew exactly what she had to wish for when she blew all of the candles out at the same time, but that she was going to tell her boyfriend. Otherwise her wish couldn’t come true! (Even though she pretty much already had it).
Jack wrapped an arm around Chloe as she ate a piece of the cake and he pressed his lips against her temple, smiling adoringly at his beautiful girlfriend.
‘’Happy 17th birthday, my sexy English lady… I love you.’’ And with that, Chloe’s wish already came true. It was the first time he said I love you to her.
