One aspect of American society that Slavitt views negatively is the materialism. Slavitt saw a great increase of consumerism and materialism when he wrote this poem in [198?]. He detested the way the American society was turning to material goods to find comfort, the way they developed specialized fields to sell items to other citizens, and how they have turned even music and entertainment into a product to sell to consumers. He addresses this through the line “well fed, with music, with lights! Ah!”(6), where he suggests that people on the RMS Titanic were able to have those luxury items before they died. These people had all of the economic goods that people covet in American society today.
