This is the week for Halloween tricks and treats. But the last four years have been no treat for our national forests. Want a really good scare this Halloween? How about this: If President Bush has his way, one third of our national forests - those that are currently free of roads, clear cuts, and development - will be opened up for potential logging, mining, and drilling.
Bush may think he's tricking us with misnomers like "Healthy Forests" initiative, but his national forest policies are no treat for our roadless forests and the wildlife that depend on them.
Remember the "Monster Mash" song? It's a Halloween classic. Well, the singer of the original song has come back to sing a new version for Defenders of Wildlife Action Fund. It's "Monster Slash," about the forest-slashing policies of the Bush administration.
