If this is confirmed by even tournament and event organizers and given how critical this issue has become, then I guess I'll speak in reaction to this:
It seems as if Tournament Legacy (John Nelson) has a bad track record of handling events like these for 4+ years or so. They advertised a guaranteed $50,000 value of winnings. A lot of players will be attracted on the thirst of cash for their hard-work of competitive gaming, while organizers will wonder how they got the $50,000, alongside the affiliations connected to it. As far as I know, the fighting game community only saw the "business" side of things that John Nelson and his team have contributed before forming Tournament Legacy. So that might sound good to the people that groups are contributing very big for years, right? Unfortunately, that doesn't seem to be the case due to negative responses. Perhaps the organizers will deliver a big explanation towards this, if possible. Currently, no word form them has been mentioned and hopefully, this will be a huge learning lesson of what needs to be done following the years to come.
On the other side, the community also takes the major blame for still supporting Tournament Legacy. I can truly understand the following cases:
- Paper trail, aka $$$.
- Supporting the community in a big way.
- Attracting sponsors and others really wanting to make it big.
- Players wanting to enter to showcase their skills and prove who the better players were (including international players).
- Second chances that they would have learned.
Regardless of reasons here, consider this a major wake-up call and growing pains towards the community. You guys should have done your research before going to the events and know what you guys are getting yourselves into. Yes, we have EVO, which set the standards of the FGC in America. We have emerging events that want to make it big (according to CEO, they made CEO as a response to prevent the same "corrupt" fate as ReveLAtions).
I am actually glad I did not show up to Revelations (I couldn't go either way). On the benefit of the doubt, this actually makes me a lot more cautious of who to deal with business-wise. If people are going to complain to me about NOT running a big event so soon, this will be the #1 reason as to why; while we can't always please everyone, we still have to be very cautious on who we deal with and what we say. In the meantime, while we want to dream big, start off small first; you want to have less scumbags than deal with it. If we say it, we do it and vice versa; there are no ifs and buts about it. In the meantime, enjoy this:
Hey, I just met you

but here's fake numbers
so c'mon, hate me?
