Hmmm

A few weeks ago I posted rape stats by country in reference to research that I was doing for my zine. Today I found the per capita stats for rape by country. Like I figured, the U.S does have more rapes than similiar economic standing nations. But what I did not expect fo find out was that Canada leads the industrial nations as highest rapes per capita.

I am sharing the below data, I just chose to post the countries that I wanted to compare. The source is the Seventh United Nations Survey of Crime Trends and Operations of Criminal Justice Systems for the years 1998-2000. They are vague when listing what constiuted as the population that they were tracking these figures for. To my knowledge the percentage is based aganist 1000 men and women of legal age for each country. It does not say that they specificaly counted only women and or ruled out children or the elderly. So I'm not sure how confident anyone can be with these stats and again it is only reported rapes. But I still find it to be really fascinating.

Canada: 0.74 rapes per 1000 people.
United States: 0.30 rapes per 1000 people.
United Kingdom: 0.14 rapes per 1000 people.
Spain: 0.14 rapes per 1000 people.
France: 0.14 rapes per 1000 people.
Netherlands: 0.10 rapes per 1000 people.
Germany: 0.09 rapes per 1000 people.
Russia: 0.04 rapes per 1000 people.
Italy: 0.04 rapes per 1000 people.
Japan: 0.01 rapes per 1000 people.

And just for comparison I am listing the murder rates for those same countries.

Canada: 0.01 murders per 1000 people.
United States: 0.04 murders per 1000 people.
United Kingdom: 0.01 murders per 1000 people.
Spain: 0.01 murders per 1000 people.
France: 0.01 murders per 1000 people.
Netherlands: 0.01 murders per 1000 people.
Germany: 0.01 murders per 1000 people.
Russia: 0.19 murders per 1000 people.
Italy: 0.01 murders per 1000 people.
Japan: 0.00 murders per 1000 people.

I am interested in hearing what others think of these stats. Particularly, I want opinions on why Canada would outdue the U.S on reported rapes while they overall have a lower general crime count than us.
