i finally had an operation to remove the weird bump on my eyelid. nothing major. i thought it was going to be a piece of cake, considering myself to have a high tolerance for pain and grossness.
wrong.
having any object, be it a q-tip, a hand, a needle, or a scalpel is very very terrifying. of course the doctor never even told me what he was going to do, he just told me to look up so i couldn't see what objects he was thrusting into my eye-pimple. first, they used a few numbing eyedrops to lessen the pain of being injected with anaesthetic and after that i don't really know what was going on. im pretty sure it involved cutting open my skin with a scalpel and prodding me with q-tips. there was blood, and this went on for a good 15 minutes. having all this activity next to my eye and not knowing what it was, i started to get really nervous --i started shaking and sweating and feeling nauseaous.. anyway, i made them stop and bring me a bucket, and then the slicing and prodding resumed. once that was finished, the doctor pulled out a strange pen looking thing, but instead of ink, it held a red-hot metal nib at the end. so he started poking me with that too.. it was very strange, i could smell myself burning.
this was by far the most intense doctor's visit ever, putting teeth-cleaning and getting stitches to great shame. while eating a sandwich at a cafe afterwards, i could not shake the image of my opthamologist's coy, face-lifted expression, his eyebrows raised in permanent surprise. i felt like such a wuss.
