Jane groaned in boredom, they had been watching the history channel for the past two hours they where showing a feature on the universe or something and Avery wanted to see it because her latest obsession was astrology. Last week it was ancient Egypt. Who knew what is was going to be next there was no telling with Avery. She was the strangest child Jane had ever met but that’s what happens when your mom is Maura Isles. Not that Jane didn’t love their weirdness with all her heart. She really did it was endearing in the case of her daughter and sexy as hell in the case of Maura.

Jane playfully kicked Avery in the leg. “You’re weird.”

Avery looked up at her and narrowed her eyes. “You’re just mad because I’m six and I’m smarter than you.” She said shooting her mother a snaggle toothed grin.

Maura who was positioned in front of Jane on the couch with her arms wrapped around her elbowed Jane in the stomach. “What have I told you about picking on our daughter?”

“That if I don’t she’s going to be a pu-” she stopped when Maura’s elbow once again came into contact with her stomach this time much more painfully. “I was going to say wimp.” Jane mumbled rubbing where Maura had struck her.

“Why is it that I feel like I have two children instead of one.”

“Because Ma’ is a kid.” Avery said yawning loudly.

Jane looked from her daughter to her wife glaring playfully at both of them. She decided to ignore her to smart for her own good daughter as she slowly turned Maura around on the couch and pressed a kiss to her soft lips.

“What do you say we put mini-Google to bed and have a little fun?” Jane suggested wiggling her eyebrows.

“It’s a little early for Avery to go to bed don’t you think?”

“Maura it’s nine.” Jane pointed out as her fingertips danced lightly from on hip to the other.

“Right Kiddo it’s time to go to bed.” said Maura as she looked up at Avery only to see her daughter studying them intently. Jane removed her hand from Maura’s stomach, she could have sworn that just minutes before Avery only had eyes and ears for the history channel.

“What’s wrong Avery?” Maura asked gently while she sat up.

Avery looked away her brow furrowing and lips twisting like it always did when she couldn’t quite understand something she looked back at Jane and Maura and sighed.

“Am I a lesbian?” she asked

Jane choked on her water coughing and gagging almost violently. When she had gotten her coughing under control she looked over at the six year old who was still staring at her and Maura waiting for an answer.

“Why do you ask that?!” Jane exclaimed.

“Because you guys are and if I’m your daughter doesn’t that mean I am? Like how I’m Irish because Mom is?”

Jane looked at Maura begging her with her eyes to take this one, Maura just laughed softly and pulled Avery into her lap. “Sweetie it doesn’t exactly work that way.”

“How does it work then?” she asked and not for the first time Jane cursed the child’s curiosity.

“Well, it’s not genetic it’s about how you feel.”

Avery looked up with a bright smile. “I have a boyfriend.” She said giggling quietly

The slight smile Jane was wearing fell at her daughters words but before she could say anything Maura stopped her with a squeeze of her leg.

“Then there is your answer.” Maura said softly she stood up and kissed the top of Avery’s head.

“Now lets get you ready for bed.”

Jane watched as her two favorite girls disappeared down the hallway and leaned back on the couch rubbing her temples. She had no idea where Avery came up with these things last week she had to explain the birds and the bees to her. She didn’t think she would have to explain that for another seven or so years. Sometimes raising a little genius could be very stressful.

She was still sitting on the couch eyes closed rubbing her temples when Maura returned/ She felt two slender hands on her thighs slowly moving upward. Jane opened her eye and raised and eyebrow.

“What the hell was that?”

“Don’t know and right now don’t care.” Maura whispered against Jane’s lips. Sometimes it amazed Jane that Maura could so effortlessly switch from mother to lover. “Right now Janie it’s mommy time.”
