Moving to America Day 1

So I finally arrived in Ohio last monday. I'm cutting the past week up because there is so much to write!

last monday I got up 3am english time which was 10pm Sunday Ohio time (the time differences really confuse me!) to get to the airport for 6.15 am. The flight was for 9.15am but for longhall flights you have to be there 3 hours early. I was painful. Especially as the flight was delayed too! The flight itself wasn't so bad- we had those cute little tvs in the seats so I ended up watching X-men Origins: Wolverine, Devil wears Prada, 2 episodes of the Big Bang Theory and an episode of Scrubs. These intersperced with random bursts of Kanjani8 on my ipod took up my 8 hour flight to Newark- I didn't sleep a wink!

Flying into Newark was surreal. As we were landing I could see the statue of liberty! And all of Manhatten! I didn't realise we were so close! We had to run to baggage claim to pick up our luggage to put onto the connecting flight- but the customs officers were being really slow- I had two french families infront of me who didn't speak english- I think they may have been connecting to Canada. But once these had finished, a french woman from the next line wanted to go infront of me- I was like "No my flight leaves in 1/2 an hour!" and she got really angry! honestly the customs guy just yelled at her and she soon shut up! He let me through pretty quickly though. It was a good thing the Detroit flight was delayed too, or else we wouldn't have made it. The plane to Detroit was tiny- I was sat on the left side by myself! Thankfully it only took an hour, but we had to fly through a storm at one point, so the turbulance was pretty scary!

Dr Ashburner was waiting for us at the Airport with Dale and Brenda- 2 of the people who work in the labs. It took an hour to drive from Detroit to Campus Village- the place we are staying at. Then Branda and Dale took us out for Dinner- my first meal in America was Southwestern chicken Calzone, and it was so big I had to ask for a pizza box. I was so full and only ate half! By this point I had been awake for 26 hours. I was swaying everytime I got up, but Dale and Brenda then decided to take us to Walmart to get some essentials. walmart is open 24 hours here- shops at home close at 5pm! So I went round and purchased a bin, lamp, toilet tissue, shower curtains, pillows and bed sheets. I couldn't even think about getting food- the mere thought made me feel queasy! Tom bought a crate of beer. Talk about essentials! lol as soon as I got home I put the sheets on my bed and passed out! I'll write about the rest of the week tomorrow. I'm still jetlagged so I'm going back to bed now!

xx
