http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20060914/ap_on_go_co/congress_terrorism if you didn't read that, basically it says that bush is trying to make it legal to torture "terrorists" as "interrogation."
that's fucked up.
the argument from supporters is that they ("terrorists") don't show humane treatment when they kill people, which somehow justifies rolling back the geneva conventions.
my response: we hold ourselves (in general; i realize this doesn't apply to the everyone [see: rational people]) to be better and more justified than the people we are fighting. wouldn't lowering our standards of ethical treatment make us no better than the alleged terrorists that this war was purportedly started over?
plus, it's too easy to start broadening the definition of terrorist to include common, domestic criminals, allowing the gov't torture them as well under the pretense of justice. and then to "suspects," which could basically include anyone.
i sincerely hope it's just me being paranoid, but it's just so easy to be when we've got an administration that's rolling back civil liberties and ethics standards like it was nothing.
fuck the bush administration.
