What You Missed: Part I, "The Finger"

Dec 07, 2008 09:34

Okay, hi there. I am still kicking. These last few weeks or so have been nothing but completely insane. In fact, you have missed so much that I will have to catch you up in installments. Really. Allow me to start from the beginning...

What You Missed: Part I, "The Finger"

I've been fervently working on a costume for a convention. I know, not my usual calling card. But a lot of these conventions are filled with costumers, etc. and I knew that if I entered my costume in the competition, it would be a great reputation builder for getting commissions once I leave the firm. So. There I am, innocently cutting some leather with a rotary cutter (essentially an insanely sharp pizza cutter). The blade skids on the leather and travels right through my finger.

*skip this part if you don't like gore*
Blood flies fucking EVERYWHERE, squirting, the whole nine. Like any normal individual, I scream my fucking head off and run, holding my bloody pulp, to Zack. Zack is one of those people that can't stand blood, so he freaks out too. We put a towel on the sucker and after a minute of coaxing, I agree to look at it. So much blood I couldn't even see the cut. I'm still screaming and crying the whole time. We race to the ER, and I burst into the waiting room. I'm all big and pregnant, holding my hand above my head with it covered in a bloody towel, blood dripping down my arm. Naturally, I'm howling in pain and sobbing. I'm sure I scared the shit out of at least a few people.

The triage/check-in guy asks me...what's wrong. I continue to howl and try to form words but basically sound like the elephant man after running five miles. They fail to ask Zack what's wrong, even though he brought me in and is standing no more than a foot from me. The triage nurse drags me into a little room and asks more questions, I howl. They make me take off the towel and plan to run the cut under water, which I am less than thrilled about. And by less than thrilled, I mean that I told them flat out no. Upon opening the towel and seeing the cut, they realize how deep it is and go "uh, nevermind...".

Fast forward to getting bandaged, some idiotic nurse telling me (while I'm howling in pain) that the allergies I have to a couple of certain medications are not true allergies. I explain that I can't really get into that right now, because I'm in fucking PAIN. It was a miracle that I didn't just kick her in the vag or something, she was being such a bitch. She offers me vicodin and gets huffy when I ask if it's safe for the baby. She asks, comes back and tells me it is. I later find out that it's basically not. I'm still considering writing a letter to the hospital.

After waiting about ten minutes, they take me back to get me stitched up. Let me tell you, when someone injects a huge gash with anesthetic, it is not fucking fun. It hurt almost as bad as cutting it in the first place. There was a lot of unintentional screaming.

*okay, it's safe for you gore hating pussies (sorry, I tells it like I sees it)*

Turns out that I cut my index finger about 1.5 inches lengthwise, down to the bone. I got out with nine stitches that stayed in for a little over two weeks. The doctor thinks I missed the tendons, but he's asked me like 439572350 times what they initially said when it was open, so I don't know how sure he is. There's a bunch of nerve damage, unfortunately. I have little to no feeling on from the last knuckle down, as well as on & near the cut. Doctor said that the nerve damage may be permanent, but we won't know for a few months. FUN!

Because I am so hardcore, I went back to costuming the next day. Hey, I have a deadline and although recovery was painful, it's not as painful as letting some dumb tool get in my way. Two days later I used the rotary cutter again. The only really bad thing is that I couldn't get any of the good drugs (or booze) because of the baby, so I was in a pretty good deal of pain for a few weeks. Also I couldn't use my left hand to shower, type (work was fun! hah), etc. Thankfully I'm feeling a lot better now, though!

Stay tuned for What You Missed: Part II, "Neighbor/Work Drama & Thanksgiving".
