Why I Love Regina Spektor

She is an incredibly unique and talented individual. She doesn’t need an entire band to make her music, she can do it with her voice and tapping out a beat; she can add on piano or guitar. She doesn’t need to change her voice in any way. She’s one of the extremely few singers who sound better live than recorded. She’s the only musician who I even have live music of. She’s the only musician I’ve ever heard of who makes up songs right on the spot at concerts and little shows.

She doesn’t write music that’s about bangin’ da h03$ or makin’ sum money or let’s have some fun! or anything that doesn’t really require much thought and is already being produced at an incredible rate being fed into the hearts of most people. She writes about history, about love, about loss at a far deeper level; she writes stories and makes them into song; she alludes and references to various writers, musicians and books.

She uses various vocal techniques not used by many and some not used by any. She sings in English, Russian, French, Latin and whatever else her heart fancies. She’ll sometimes sing, purposely, in a thick accent (her favourite being her New Yorker one.) She’ll play on pronunciations and sounds of things that when listened to don’t make sense.

She sings for charity, she plays for fun, she sings and plays because her soul wouldn’t bear it any other way.
