He had no idea what it is exactly that made him leave the small town beyond this road - the place which welcomed and nourished him as a child. Perhaps it was because he’s always been a free spirit, always looking out for adventure, and while he was given a good sense of security and camaraderie there, it just wasn’t enough for him. Kouyou sighed, because even despite all of his travels and various experiences, he had no special story to share. Whatever people said about places, things, they were just that; a bit more glorified, but nothing really special. Once in a while all the glitz and glamour of the city would wear off, and he’d end up missing the simple things that he had back home. But he never went back. That was just how things were.

After thinking long and hard about it, he decided that maybe a short visit wouldn’t hurt. He’ll be like a quiet breeze - his presence would be fleeting, and whether it would be noticed or not, he wouldn’t mind.

Some things just don’t change, he thought. The old, wooden bench by the entrance of the town was still there, feeble-looking but sturdy as ever. He remembered as a child how he’d climb and jump on it, in hopes of being able to break it down for no reason, but his efforts did not budge it at all. Kouyou had to smile. Everything in this town was exactly like this bench - no matter what destruction, what wave of change outsiders wanted to do with it, it wouldn’t move at all. It was this strength and simplicity that made him comfortable with his life before, but somehow those things intimidated him; he didn’t want to be too independent or be a burden to anybody in this place. Change was also always politely rejected, and Kouyou liked change.

With every step that he made, he gradually remembered what it was that made him want to explore the world and it left an unpleasant pit in his stomach. With every second that passed, the urge to turn on his heels and head back from where he came grew stronger, until he reached that familiar building not so far away.

Kouyou stood still in front of the rundown, gloomy apartment complex, observing it from across the street with his eyes narrowed and one hand raised, protecting his sight from the first rays of the sun. His former home hadn’t looked any different, as with everything in this place. Absentmindedly he slipped a hand down his pocket to collect his keys, and smiled when he found the one for his old unit still there. Something at the back of his mind suggested that maybe something out of the ordinary was there for some reason. He laughed, because of course, how would that be? Still he debated to himself to whether or not he should just remain in this distance and reminisce, but then again, he’d always been spontaneous.

He found himself in front of the door - Room 407, it said on the slanted signage that hung there - pushing in his washed out gold key into the equally washed out knob and silently entered, acting as if somebody was there. He laughed; it was stupid being this careful when he knew nobody could possibly be in here.

And yet he felt otherwise.

Kouyou took a slow, careful stride as he glanced from room to room, flinching every time the wooden flooring would creak. Somehow he also felt that this place wasn’t vacant at all, and the feeling strengthened as he reached the doorless bedroom.

A mass of black hair was sprawled on what used to be his pillows and a lean body huddled on what he remembered to be a really stiff bed. He walked closer, taking in the familiar scent of the man who rested on what used to be his. Apparently, Yuu took over the place when he left, and he couldn’t help but feel a bit awkward upon seeing him again. He remembered not saying goodbye to him the day he decided to travel the outside world, remembered that he’d forgotten his existence until now, and that made him bite down on his lip. Regardless, the other man’s peaceful sleeping face put his guilt-ridden heart at ease.

He kneeled down beside the bed and lingered for a few moments before he closed his eyes, in hopes of burning the image of Yuu’s drowsy smile into his mind. As he opened them, Yuu was already up and awake, one arm supporting himself against the bed. Kouyou instinctively moved back; needless to say very startled with Yuu’s sudden waking up. However his stance softened when the other reached a hand to his cheek, stroking it softly, longingly, lovingly.

Questions of where he went and why he went away didn’t pass Yuu’s lips. Instead, formed there was a sweeter smile from before. “You shouldn’t have troubled yourself today, you know.” His soft voice ringed on Kouyou’s ear, and the guilt pierced his heart even more. Just as the blond parted his mouth to speak, Yuu let out a soft laugh and brought a finger down on those plush lips. “You don’t have to say anything, Kouyou.”

“Thank you.” Kouyou’s lips cracked into a smile as well.

His eyes wandered to the spot on the wall where an unkempt calendar hung. Kouyou shook his head, realizing something. The question wasn’t why he left the comfort of his old home in the first place, but why he dared look and go back now, of all things, of all times.

Suddenly he threw his arms around Yuu’s small body, locking him into an embrace. “Happy birthday, Yuu.”

Yuu let out another small laugh as he circled his arms around Kouyou’s waist, surprising the latter with how kind and normal he was responding. “Thank you, but really, you didn’t have to come here. Even if you just wished me that and said it to the sky, I think I’d hear it.”

Though the guilty pang in his heart persisted, Kouyou just held Yuu tighter, drowning himself with the other’s kind words. “Though I’m glad I got to see you again,” the brunet continued, gently rubbing on the small of Kouyou’s back.

“And I’m glad I came back,” the blond answered, burying his face in the crook of Yuu’s neck.

They stayed like that until the bright, morning sunlight seeped through the tinted windows into the dim bedroom, finding no more need for words. Somewhere along the line, when Kouyou looked up to the sky, he genuinely realized how good it was to be back.
