Writer's Block: Nature Gone Wild

Nov 14, 2008 11:41

Clownfish are protandrous hermaphrodites. This means that they are all born first as males (pro - first, androus - male), but can change their gender during their lifetimes. Usually, a breeding male and female pairing live together with smaller, non-reproductive male clownfish. When the female dies, the dominant male changes its sex and becomes a female, and one of the smaller males will breed with the new girl in the block. This is a procreative strategy know as sequential hermaphroditism.
